Minnesota Timberwolves guard Bones Hyland lifts team to victory over Golden State Warriors

Not only did the Minnesota Timberwolves enter Monday night still playing with the weight of the city on their backs after all the incidents that have happened this month, but they did so riding a five-game losing streak where they haven't looked like themselves.

They weren't staying true to their defensive identity and weren't looking like one of the top offensive teams that they've been all year. Factoring in Anthony Edwards being a late scratch, it made it all the more challenging for the Timberwolves to overcome a Golden State Warriors team, even though they were severely shorthanded.

Timberwolves Reserve Shines In Victory

Going up against a Warriors team without Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, and Jonathan Kuminga, the Timberwolves did what many expected them to do and took care of business 108-83. However, it didn't come with any flashy performances from their starters, but rather one of their top bench players.

Naz Reid scored 15 points and had a team-high +30 plus-minus, but it was Bones Hyland who brought the energy for the Minnesota, scoring 17 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and dishing out five assists in a stellar performance.

After the game, head coach Chris Finch gave props to the reserve guard for what he was able to do on both ends of the floor.

"Huge. Not just obviously the production, which was great, but also just the pop that he played with. I like his defense too. I thought his defense was really good, it was on point. We gotta have those performances on a nightly basis to be honest with you," Finch said.

While Hyland didn't have a great start to the season, he's been great as of late, especially when Edwards has been out. In the four games he's played this season, where Edwards has been out, and he's played at least 20 minutes, he's averaged 17.5 points and has had five assists in each of those outings.

"Staying aggressive. Pushing the pace, trying to get downhill. I think he's got an opportunity to race more coverages and get to the paint or get to draw multiple guys. He can finish in there and also find, and that's what we desperately need," he added.

Hyland isn't the flashiest of names, especially since he's struggled to find a consistent role since leaving the Denver Nuggets during the 2022-23 season. However, he's seemingly found a fit with the Timberwolves, a team desperate for help at a guard position that has a void after Nickeil Alexander-Walker's departure.

The Timberwolves surely don't want Edwards missing much more time this season, but Finch and his staff now know that Hyland is a player they can look to in order to step up.
