Chris Finch is putting his trust in LaMelo Ball.
LaMelo Ball is one of the most exciting additions to a NBA team in recent memory. The Minnesota Timberwolves for so long have needed a true playmaker, someone who can create offense off the ball who can create opportunities for their star player in Anthony Edwards, who himself has only continued to grow as an offensive unit and Ball fits all of those categories.
As an individual player, he’s incredibly exciting and dynamic. He was the offensive engine of the Charlotte Hornets since the minute that he debuted and on top of that his playmaking abilities give him the kind of traits that make the players around him that much better.
That’s exactly the kind of player that the Timberwolves need and in terms of what to do to game plan around him, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch is just putting his trust in Ball and his talents to facilitate the offense around him and ideally lead to a lot of success.
“I think you just put the ball in LaMelo’s hands early & just trust him to make the right play, he’s got a proven history of that," Finch said (via Kyle Ingram).
What Is the Ceiling for Ball and Edwards?
Of course, the combination of Edwards and Ball is still untested, but everything on paper says that this should be an incredibly dynamic offensive core and possibly one of the most talented back courts in the league.
The Timberwolves have needed to address their absence of a true point guard for so long now, even forcing Anthony Edwards to play out of position in order to try to facilitate more offense, but now that the team doesn’t have Julius Randel or Naz Reid, they need offensive creators and offensive contributors that much more, which is also what makes Balls addition to the team so valuable.
By all accounts, he should fit seamlessly into the scheme that the Timberwolves run and be able to facilitate so much offense around him for a team that in the past season was something that was the key to their success.
Trusting Ball to do his thing is the exact right move that Chris Finch can make right now, the same way that he’s trusted Anthony Edwards to do his thing and putting the two of them together and giving them the free freedom to create and experiment and overwhelm opposing offenses should be incredibly productive for the Timberwolves and ideally should lead to a lot of success.
