Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels speaks after game five against the Denver Nuggets.
Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels put a target on his back in the eyes of the Denver Nuggets fans for his actions at the end of game four.
McDaniels broke an "unwritten rule" of basketball, scoring in the final seconds after the game had been effectively conceded by the other side, as a comeback would have been impossible.
The Nuggets stopped playing after a missed three by Murray, and McDaniels scored on a layup. Nuggets MVP Nikola Jokic took exception to the play by McDaniels, racing down the court and getting his face.
The two pushed and shoved into the Timberwolves bench, leading to both teams getting into a bit of a scuffle as officials tried to break things up. In the end, Jokic and Julius Randle, who was aggressively shoving people away, were ejected and later fined by the league. There were no suspensions.
Jaden McDaniels in Denver
With the end of game four still fresh on the mind of Denver fans, the crowd at Ball Arena booed and jeered McDaniels from the opening tip off and all throughout game five.
"I didn't really feel too much," McDaniels said after the game when asked if he felt players and the crowd were trying to egg him on. "Besides the crowd, it's all fun to me. I don't really care; I feed into it. We just have to get the job done next game, and there is no more talking."
Asked how he felt coming into the arena and being the villain, McDaniels replied, "It's cool. I like it. I'm shaking my head the whole time they are booing me and laughing. They can't get in my head. I already expect it to come."
A Bold Prediction
The majority of game five was not competitive as the Nuggets came in with a fire that seemed to be lacking in the last three games, putting them into a 3-1 hole.
Denver took the lead early in the first quarter and never looked back. Minnesota remained competitive throughout the first half, but Denver pushed the lead to 20 points by the end of the third and led by as many as 27 in the fourth.
Despite the lopsided loss, McDaniels remains confident going into game six back in Minnesota.
"Yeah, I love this environment," he said about the boos throughout the game. "Everyone hates me. All the hate coming towards me. I love it. I don't care. I feed into it. It brings the best out of me. We ended up losing today, but we're going to win the next one."
McDaniels stuggled in game five, scoring 13 points and going 0-3 from three. He was a team worst -25.
Game six takes place on Thursday.
