The Minnesota Timberwolves got off to a red-hot start to begin 2026, going 6-1 and defeating the San Antonio Spurs, looking more like the team that has made consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances. However, that hot start was short-lived, as they've now lost their past four contests.
With their two most recent losses coming from the Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls, it's clear the Timberwolves just haven't been there mentally. Losing their defensive identity as well, back-to-back home contests against the Golden State Warriors serve as an opportunity for them to get back on track.
After the loss on Thursday night against the Bulls, star forward Julius Randle, who led all scorers with 30 points, spoke about what the team needs to do in order to turn around their situation.
"A lot of effort," Randle said. "We got in this together, so we're gonna have to get out of it together. So, it's gonna take a lot of effort and a lot of focus. Pick up of intensity. Typically, around this time of year, guys are peeking at the calendar, looking for the break. We got to find a way to finish out strong and win games we're supposed to."
The Timberwolves have 11 games remaining on their schedule until the All-Star break, and won't have more than one day of rest in between contests until then. However, many of those games are contests the Timberwolves should win, and they can't afford to be caught looking ahead instead of what's in front of them.
"We haven't been doing that obviously, and it's biting us right now," he added.
Randle also pointed out that the energy has been different recently, but it's on the players to change that.
Of course, with the team struggling as of late, it starts up conversations about whether it's time to make a move on this roster. Unless a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo becomes available before the deadline, then Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle, Rudy Gobert, and Jaden McDaniels likely won't be dealt.
However, moving off young players like Terrence Shannon Jr. and Rob Dillingham seems like a viable option, given their lack of production in the opportunities they've had this season. If they can find a way to add more experienced talents to their roster, it could do wonders for them come playoff time.
For the time being, the Timberwolves must refocus before a primetime matchup against the Warriors on Saturday evening, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. EST.
