Rudy Gobert discusses his budding chemistry with Kyle Anderson and Ayo Dosunmu.
The Minnesota Timberwolves made some big bench additions at the trade deadline, acquiring Ayo Dosunmu in a trade with the Chicago Bulls, and re-signing Kyle Anderson after he was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies.
Both players have been key contributors to help stabilize both ends of the floor when Anthony Edwards needs a rest.
In 16 games with the Timberwolves, Dosunmu is playing 26.8 minutes per night and averaging 12.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists.
The veteran Anderson is playing 16.9 minutes in eight games, and averaging 3.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and three assists in his role as a connector and communicator.
Rudy Gobert Speaks On Chemistry
Gobert is familiar with Anderson as the two played together in Minnesota from 2022 to 2024 when Anderson was previously on the team.
Dosunmu is a new addition, but Gobert has already found it easy to play with the energy he brings off the bench.
“I think they’re great. I think it’s really about making the right play, I was under the bucket, found the pocket and was able to score. It’s really the better basketball, it’s winning basketball. We don’t know who’s going to get the shot, but we try to make the right play," told the media after the Timberwolves toppled the Jazz, 147-111.
With Edwards sidelined, Dosunmu was moved into the starting lineup for Minnesota. He finished with a team high 23 points on 7-13 shooting and six assists.
Gobert had 21 points, his first 20+ point outing since February 20, to go along with 12 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
Anderson contributed eight points and six assists off the bench.
The Timberwolves finished with 39 assists as a team, well above their season average of 26.3. It was their highest team assist total all season, besting the 37 assists they had against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 13 in another game that Edwards did not play.
Digging Deeper
Though Gobert worked well with Dosunmu and Anderson on Wednesday, the minutes haven't always been great when those three have shared the floor.
In 24 minutes together, they have a net rating of -22.4. The offensive rating is completely off a cliff at 79.6.
Gobert is one of Minnesota's most impactful players with a +5.9 net rating and a +5.1 net on-off rating. Both of those numbers are the second best among Minnesota players who have played over 800 minutes this season.
Though the numbers don't look great now, the Timberwolves should be encouraged with Wednesday's game, and have to be optimistic the chemistry will continue to build with Anthony Edwards set to miss at least a week.
