Could the Minnesota Timberwolves be moving on from Julius Randle?
The Minnesota Timberwolves could be in store for changes in the offseason as they figure out how to return to the Western Conference Finals or advance even further after losing in the second round to the San Antonio Spurs in six games this past season.
Minnesota already has its superstar player in Anthony Edwards, and now they have to make sure they can get the right pieces around him as he enters his prime years and continues to grow as a player on and off the court.
The team has strong assets around him with Jaden McDaniels growing into a two-way force who should continue to improve on the offensive end, and Naz Reid already establishing himself as one of the best bench players in the league.
The Future of Julius Randle
Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reports that the Timberwolves might be interested in moving Julius Randle to land a bigger star who might fit better alongside Edwards.
"Many rival scouts have pointed to Julius Randle being packaged with DiVincenzo and the 28th pick for an established All-Star-like talent to pair with Edwards, but the Wolves' primary targets like Giannis, Kawhi Leonard, and Kyrie Irving don't appear to be plausible options at the moment," he wrote.
Randle's value isn't at its highest after a poor playoff performance where he was a net negative against the Spurs.
DiVincenzo is going to miss the majority of this upcoming season after suffering a torn Achilles in the first round against the Denver Nuggets.
The 28th pick has some value in what is a deep draft, but it's still at the end of the first round.
What Can The Timberwolves Get For Randle?
Kawhi, Giannis, and Kyrie are unlikely to be moved in exchange for Randle as the Clippers, Bucks, and Mavericks wouldn't seem to have much interest in him.
Randle is owed $33 million this upcoming season and then has a player option worth $35.8 million the following season. Trading for two years of Randle probably isn't appealing for most teams given that he's 32 and has noticeable flaws when it matters.
Of course, there is always a trade out there, and while Kawhi, Giannis, and Kyrie might not be attainable for the Timberwolves, maybe the Memphis Grizzlies would be willing to part with Ja Morant.
Morant also has two years left on his contract, and comes at a higher price than Randle. If the Grizzlies are looking to save money and continue to move away from the Morant era, adding a first round pick could be worthwhile for them.
