It was a busy offseason for the Minnesota Timberwolves as they started off with a bang, trading their top two power forwards in deals that ended up becoming one.

The team initially dumped Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, attaching a first-round pick and getting back a second-round pick.

They then traded Naz Reid and multiple first-round picks to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for LaMelo Ball.

By trading Randle, their starting power forward for the past two seasons, and Reid, their backup power forward and one of the best bench players in the league, the Timberwolves had a giant hole at the four position.

They pursued LeBron James, but came up short in their efforts as he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

When it looked like hope was lost, they managed to sell Jonathan Kuminga on taking less money to join them, offering a starting spot and a chance to compete with a team that fits his style.

Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd spoke with the Star Tribune, where he gave insight into the recruitment process of Kuminga.

“My wife asked me at one point, how many times has he called you? She was referencing Jonathan Kuminga's agent. How many times have you been on the phone with him since the middle of July? So I said, okay, I will look, and we went through my phone and we had 94 phone calls between July 15th to the day we signed Jonathan,” he said.

Lloyd gave credit to Anthony Edwards, saying he was instrumental in the recruiting process, and that Kuminga had conversations with much of the Minnesota staff, including head coach Chris Finch.

It was announced on August 26 that Kuminga had signed with the Timberwolves. If Lloyd had 94 phone calls with Kuminga’s team between July 15 and August 26 (42 days), that’s 2.2 phone calls per day.

Hope they have unlimited minutes.

It all worked out for the Timberwolves, as they were able to land Kuminga when it looked like the Los Angeles Lakers were the frontrunners for his services.

Minnesota needed a starting power forward after the losses of Randle and Reid, and were looking at either starting Trey Lyles, who spent last year in the EuroLeague, or Ayo Dosunmu, sliding Jaden McDaniels to the starting four and going small to begin the game.

With Kuminga, they got a perfect fit on both ends of the floor as he can guard multiple positions on defense while running and attacking the rim on offense.
