Timberwolves Might've Never Had a Real Chance to Land LeBron James

For weeks, the Minnesota Timberwolves were mentioned as a possible destination for LeBron James following his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rumors connected the four-time NBA champion to a veteran roster built around Anthony Edwards, creating speculation that Minnesota could make a serious push.

According to James' agent, Rich Paul, however, that scenario never came close to becoming reality.

Speaking on the "Game Over" podcast, Paul revealed the list of legitimate contenders was much smaller than many believed. He said the process ultimately centered around four teams: the Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

While Minnesota was briefly discussed internally, Paul made it clear the Timberwolves never emerged as a true finalist after reports this week that James will be joining the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year $8 million veteran minimum deal.

"It's freezing there," Paul said while discussing why the Timberwolves ultimately fell out of consideration.

The comment added a lighthearted moment to an otherwise revealing look at one of the biggest free agency decisions in recent NBA history.

Throughout the offseason, reports surfaced linking James to several contenders around the league. Minnesota frequently appeared in those discussions because of its talented young core, recent playoff success and established defense.

Still, Paul's comments suggest many of those reports overstated the Timberwolves' chances.

Instead, James and his representatives focused on organizations they believed offered the strongest combination of championship potential, roster fit and personal preference.

Philadelphia ultimately won that competition, signing James to a two-year contract with a player option after selling the veteran star on another opportunity to compete for an NBA championship.

The Heat offered familiarity after James spent four seasons in Miami, while Cleveland represented an emotional return to the franchise where he began his career and delivered its first NBA championship. Golden State, meanwhile, had long been viewed as an intriguing basketball fit alongside Stephen Curry.

Minnesota simply never reached that level of consideration.

Even without seriously entering the LeBron James sweepstakes, the Timberwolves remained one of the NBA's most active teams this offseason.

Minnesota made its biggest move by acquiring LaMelo Ball and Josh Green from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Naz Reid and draft considerations, giving the franchise another playmaker to pair alongside Edwards.

The Timberwolves also retained key backcourt depth by re-signing Jaylen Clark, Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland.

The front office continued adding young talent by drafting first-round pick Isaiah Evans and bringing back Enrique Freeman on a two-way contract.

While adding James would have immediately elevated Minnesota's championship hopes, Rich Paul's comments indicate the organization was never truly in the running despite the speculation.

Instead, the Timberwolves focused on improving their roster through trades and internal development.

With Edwards continuing to emerge as one of the league's brightest young stars and Ball now joining the backcourt, Minnesota still enters the 2026-27 season with expectations of competing near the top of the Western Conference.

Although James ultimately chose the Philadelphia 76ers, the Timberwolves' offseason demonstrated they were prepared to build their future around the talent already in place rather than waiting on a superstar who was never likely to arrive.
