The Minnesota Timberwolves made headlines lately after the news that American businessman Marc Stad has reached a deal to acquire a majority stake in the Timberwolves for the price of $4.5 billion, and in the days that deal was announced former MLB star Alex Rodriguez, who owns a partial stake in the Timberwolves as well, has put out a statement. 

Rodriguez officially joined the Timberwolves ownership group in 2025, entering into an agreement with then-majority owner Glen Taylor alongside Rodriguez's business partner Marc Lore. After the majority sale to Stad, both Rodriguez and Lore will be adjusting their ownership stakes in different directions, with Rodriguez taking on a new role within the governance of the team as well.

"One of the great joys I've had in my career is spending the last few years helping build the Timberwolves and [Minnesota] Lynx with my friend and partner Marc Lore. I'm very excited to announce that this incredible journey reaches a new level today," Rodriguez wrote in a statement posted on his X account.

Rodriguez continued, "I will also be increasing my investment and spending more time with the teams as co-chairman, governor of the Lynx and alternate governor of the Timberwolves, pending league approval."

Stad already possessed an ownership stake prior to his full takeover of the team and has simply elevated that stake to majority status with his recent move and with both Rodriguez and Stad being fellow minority owners in the past, their working relationship is entering into a new height as they take full charge of the direction of the Timberwolves together.

This change comes at a critical time for the Timberwolves franchise. They've just made a massive addition to the team in the form of adding LaMelo Ball via trade with the Charlotte Hornets during the offseason and even if the Western Conference will be a tough battle next season, the Timberwolves will be geared up to be legitimate contenders for a championship. 

In Rodriguez's brief time as a member of the Timberwolves and Lynx ownership group, both teams have enjoyed substantial success. The Lynx stand out as one of the premier teams in the WNBA, finishing with the best regular season record in the league last season at 34-10 and still enjoying the best record in the league so far this season at 31-7. 

The Timberwolves have enjoyed much more moderate success relative to their WNBA counterpart, but have continued to be an exciting team with a lot of promise, most notably after upsetting the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs last season. 

Rodriguez's role with the team will be an elevated one, rather than a new one, but based on his brief track record of success with both teams, he will play a major role in leading both the Timberwolves and the Lynx in a confident new direction.
