Rudy Gobert has absorbed plenty of criticism throughout his career, but his résumé makes Chris Finch's Hall-of-Fame declaration difficult to dismiss.

Rudy Gobert has become one of the NBA's easiest stars to criticize, but Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch believes the center's eventual place in basketball history should be obvious.

Finch recently described Gobert as a first-ballot Hall of Famer, offering a strong endorsement of a player whose career has often generated polarizing discussion.

“He’s driven by pride,” Finch said. “He’s confident, and he has every reason to believe he’s a good player because he really is. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Whether Gobert ultimately enters on the first ballot will depend on the class surrounding him, but Finch's larger point is difficult to dispute.

Gobert has built one of the greatest defensive résumés of his generation.

Gobert’s defensive résumé speaks for itself

Gobert is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, tying Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace for the most awards in league history.

That alone places him in historic company.

Gobert has also earned nine All-Defensive selections, four All-NBA selections and three All-Star appearances.

His impact has never been primarily measured by scoring. Gobert built his reputation by protecting the rim, controlling the glass and altering how opponents attack the paint.

That type of influence can be difficult to appreciate compared with high-volume scorers or dynamic offensive creators, especially when Gobert's postseason shortcomings have repeatedly become part of the conversation surrounding him.

But Hall-of-Fame cases are based on entire careers, not isolated playoff possessions or viral clips.

Gobert's career accomplishments already compare favorably with some of basketball's greatest defensive centers.

When he won his third Defensive Player of the Year award in 2021, he joined Mutombo, Wallace and Dwight Howard as the only players at the time to win the honor at least three times.

Gobert eventually added a fourth.

International career strengthens his case

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame also considers accomplishments beyond the NBA, which further strengthens Gobert's résumé.

The French center has enjoyed an accomplished international career, highlighted by an Olympic silver medal.

That matters when evaluating his overall basketball legacy.

Gobert may never receive the universal appreciation afforded to more offensively gifted stars. His limited scoring arsenal has made him an easy target, while difficult postseason matchups have sometimes exposed weaknesses that aren't as noticeable during the regular season.

None of that erases what he has accomplished.

Winning Defensive Player of the Year once establishes a player as elite. Winning it four times puts someone in a category occupied by only the most accomplished defenders in NBA history.

There can be a legitimate debate over the "first-ballot" portion of Finch's statement because Hall-of-Fame classes vary every year.

The Hall of Fame itself, however, should not be much of a debate.

Gobert's combination of NBA awards, sustained defensive excellence and international success has already created a résumé worthy of Springfield.

Finch isn't merely defending his player. He's pointing toward a career that, once viewed in its entirety, will be difficult for Hall-of-Fame voters to ignore.
