There is one detail holding up the Timberwolves' biggest trade this offseason.
The LaMelo Ball trade that the Minnesota Timberwolves was by far one of the most surprising moves of the offseason by any team so far and it's a move that radically addresses the critical need that the Timberwolves had for a playmaker and a partner in the back court for Anthony Edwards.
With the trade, the Timberwolves have an exciting offensive core if nothing else, but there are still a few hangups that has kept the trade form being absolutely certain.
The Timberwolves haven't officially announced the trade yet and that's due to the complex nature of how the deal was done and the moving pieces involved that need to be squared away by all parties before things can be made official.
Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball (1) is fouled by Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black (0) during the second half during the play-in rounds of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Kia Center. Mike Watters-Imagn ImagesIt was a four-team trade that promises to bring Ball to Minnesota, a trade involving the Timberwolves, Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls.
What's Holding Up the Trade?
The trade also involves players like Naz Reid, Julius Randle, multiple draft picks and Mouhamadou Guye.
It's Guye that's holding up the deal, per a report from ClutchPoints. Guye is intended to be traded from the Bulls to the Timberwolves, but since Guye signed his contract with the Bulls on April 9, he can't be traded at all until July 9, the three month anniversary of the signing.
This delay is mostly just a formality and shouldn't do much to deter any of the teams involved from completing the trade, but it is the driving force as to why the deal hasn't been announced as official despite the assumption from all parties involved that it will be as soon as time allows.
How Are the Timberwolves Changed?
The trade is a major step up for the Timberwolves and a move that few could have expected that they would make this offseason, but it does make them an intriguing team in the Western Conference.
Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball (1) shoots over Minnesota Timberwolves guard Bones Hyland (8) in the fourth quarter at Target Center. Matt Blewett-Imagn ImagesIt's not necessarily a move that instantly makes the Timberwolves contenders are allows them to truly compete with teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs and the losses of Julius Randles and Naz Reid does call other aspects of their team construction into question, but it's still a move that elevates Minnesota overall.
If and when the deal is announced, a new era should begin for Timberwolves basketball, an era that should be even more dynamic and exciting than the product that fans have already enjoyed, and it could be an era that, while the odds would be stacked against them, could bring them to the promised land as well.
