The Minnesota Timberwolves are entering this offseason needing to find a reliable second option for star player Anthony Edwards. Minnesota has dealt with this issue for multiple seasons, and with a significant injury to Donte Divincenzo, the issue becomes more glaring. 

During the first round of the NBA playoffs, Divincenzo tore his Achilles and is expected to miss most, if not all, of 2026-2027. One player the Minnesota Timberwolves were rumored to be pursuing was Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. 

After a recent update from Jake Fischer suggested that Minnesota isn't involved in those negotiations anymore, the franchise may have to pivot to pursuing someone else. 

One superstar and former MVP who has the potential to be on the trade market this summer is Kevin Durant. While it would take a big haul to acquire Durant, the move is not impossible, and it may be necessary. 

Kevin Durant is 37 years old, but he has yet to show any real signs of regression and is still a premier player in the NBA. In 2025-2026, Durant averaged 26 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. 

He played in 78 games and was a pivotal piece of the Rockets' run to the playoffs as a fifth seed. The year ended for him in disappointing fashion, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-2 in a series where he missed all but one game in the postseason. 

The Minnesota Timberwolves brought in Julius Randle via trade in 2024, and while statistically he brought in a lot of contributions on offense, Randle has not moved the needle for Minnesota. 

The Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals in 2025, but after this year's second-round exit, the team knows it will need more if they want to win a championship with Anthony Edwards. 

In the past, Anthony Edwards has talked about how he would like to play with Kevin Durant at some point in his career, and there is a chance that could be a reality this offseason. 

Durant and Edwards faced off in a first-round playoff series in 2024, and we saw friendly jawing back and forth between the two, showing they have respect for one another. 

The two also played together on the 2024 gold medal USA team, and Minnesota was very close to trading for Durant during the 2025 trade deadline. 

Durant could benefit from playing with Edwards, as he won't be the premier player on offense, but he can still take over a game if needed. He is on the tail end of his career, but Edwards has shown he is capable of making a deep playoff run, and Durant could be motivated to compete for a championship once again.
