Damian Lillard and Donovan Clingan dominated the desert, overcoming Devin Booker’s 33-point night to keep Portland perfect on the road despite missing key starters to early injuries.
The Portland Trail Blazers have been one of the best teams in the NBA thus far, regardless of conference. And they improved to 6-1 on Wednesday night with a convincing 132-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns, remaining undefeated on the road through five games.
And this is without Ja Morant, who is out for several weeks with an injury. This team hasn't skipped a beat in his absence.
Though the Suns got off to a strong start behind Devin Booker, Portland flipped the momentum in the second quarter with 43 points in that period to take control of the game, and the Blazers never looked back.
This is a team that has a balanced scoring attack, shoots efficiently, moves the ball to create good looks and has gotten better defensively, too.
Damian Lillard continues to have a resurgence of a season, leading the way for the Blazers with 25 points. Donovan Clingan had a season-high 24 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. His presence on both ends of the floor was remarkable in this game.
And Deni Avdija, of course, is always somebody who's going to stuff the stat sheet. He finished with 21 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds, making an impact both as a creator and a scorer.
Off the bench, Jrue Holiday added 15 points and knocked down five three-pointers, providing important bench scoring in the backcourt.
For Phoenix, Booker finished with 33 points, while Jalen Green chipped in 22. But despite the Suns having several strong individual performances, they couldn't find a way to slow down Portland's balanced offensive attack.
At 6-1, the Blazers have established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the Western Conference. And perhaps most impressively, they've accomplished this while dealing with injuries and relying on several different players to step up throughout the early portion of the season.
Portland has now won five consecutive road games to open the season, further demonstrating just how impressive this team has been away from home.
The Blazers will face another real test on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers on the road, with an opportunity to continue building momentum and prove that this early-season success is sustainable.
