Would it be a mistake for the Blazers to trade Jrue Holiday?

The Portland Trail Blazers appear to be one of the teams hoping to be active on the trade market this offseason when it comes to adding talent, improving the roster and finding a potential seller that’s looking to hit reset.

But there’s also a world where multiple moves happen, and one of those could involve Portland selling in order to be better equipped to buy.

That might be the case with Jrue Holiday, who was reported this week by Jake Fischer to be a player the Blazers are expected to field offers on this offseason. To be clear, that doesn’t mean Portland is actively shopping him or wants to get rid of him. It just means the Blazers are open to hearing what other teams would offer for the veteran point guard.

Obviously, Holiday has championship experience. He’s a pest defensively, can knock down perimeter shots and was a huge reason the Blazers were as good as they were this season. But whether it’s packaging him in a larger deal for a star by using his contract or selling off on him to gain more flexibility and additional assets to make a separate move, it’s worth monitoring the Holiday situation.

That’s especially true given he’ll be 36 next season and is owed nearly $35 million. He also has a player option for the 2027-28 season worth just over $37 million, when he’ll be 37 years old.

The Blazers are obviously hoping to be better this upcoming season, but their medium-to-long-term window is still where the real contention upside sits. Because of that, it would make sense to see what Holiday could bring back and whether Portland could land a player who’s at least a few years younger while still being able to contribute right away.

As such, the potential of trading Holiday this offseason does feel fairly real for the Blazers if they get the right offer, the right package and the right path to improving the roster.
