A hard foul sparked a multi-year grudge between the Warriors veteran and Portland's rising star, proving that the four-time champion never forgets—and never misses a receipt.
Draymond Green has won four NBA championships, made four All-Star teams and built a reputation as one of basketball's most relentless competitors.
He's also been keeping a mental note about Deni Avdija for nearly two years.
The Portland Trail Blazers forward learned that getting on Green's bad side comes with an extended warranty. One hard foul, a little trash talk and a couple of seasons later … the Golden State Warriors veteran still insists he has unfinished business.
Judging by their recent conversation, Avdija is having just as much fun with the whole thing.
During a recent appearance on The Draymond Green Show, the two revisited an on-court collision reportedly dating back to Portland's October 2024 season opener against Golden State.
Avdija recalled hitting Green hard enough that he spent the rest of the game expecting some sort of response.
It never came. So, naturally, Avdija decided to ask Green what happened to the retaliation he'd been anticipating.
"Hey, Dre, like, man, I was waiting for you the whole game. I thought you gonna get me back, man. What you doing?" Avdija recalled asking.
Green's explanation suggests Avdija might have been a little premature in assuming he'd escaped.
"I have the brain of an elephant," Green said. "So, I never forget."
And Green wasn't finished.
"I'm still going to get you because you laid me out," he told Avdija — a warning that sounds even funnier when you remember the original incident happened nearly two years ago.
Green has never been particularly interested in keeping his disagreements to himself. He's spent much of his career getting under opponents' skin, challenging them physically and turning routine possessions into personal exchanges.
In this case, though, the confrontation earned Avdija some respect.
Green explained that after warning Avdija about what might happen the next time he attacked the basket, the forward accepted the challenge without backing down. There was no argument, no extended confrontation … just two competitors who understood exactly what the other was saying.
That was enough to impress Green, even if it wasn't enough to get Avdija off his list.
The two laughed about the incident during their conversation, which should tell you just about everything you need to know about how seriously they're taking this supposed grudge.
Green might have a reputation for holding onto things, but Avdija doesn't seem particularly concerned about a two-year-old warning.
The forward earned his first All-Star selection in 2026 and has developed into one of the Blazers' most important players.
His willingness to attack defenders and absorb contact has become a major part of his game — something Green had already noticed long before Avdija became an All-Star.
Green even admitted that his list of unfinished business extends beyond Portland.
He brought up former Michigan State teammate Xavier Tillman, who once caught him with a hard elbow during a game. Tillman eventually headed overseas before Green could return the favor … leaving another imaginary debt unpaid.
Avdija, meanwhile, challenged one of basketball's most notorious agitators, spent the rest of the game waiting for the consequences and somehow came away with the veteran's respect.
Nearly two years later, Green is still talking about it — and Avdija seems perfectly content to keep the joke going.
If Green ever decides to revive their little disagreement on the court, at least Avdija can't say he wasn't warned. He's been getting a heads-up since 2024.
