The NBA's annual trade deadline is fast approaching. In the days leading up to February 5th, all eyes will be on the teams selling assets to see who swoops in to take them.
Role players will be available, like always, and surprises can happen, like with Luka Doncic being traded out of the blue last year. However, this year has one guaranteed topic that will get its attention, one way or another.
After it was announced that Giannis Antetokounmpo is ready to be traded and that the Milwaukee Bucks are actively listening to offers, a storm of trade rumors erupted. That included one of the primary teams reported to be interested: the Golden State Warriors.
Multiple names have been thrown out into the wind as part of potential trade packages, and all the players can do is suck it up and be prepared for whatever may come next in this business.
After the Warriors' loss to the Pistons on Friday, De'Anthony Melton was asked about how he deals with the trade rumors and continues to play amidst them.
"Honestly, you just got to put your head down and work. Some stuff is out of your control. I mean, early in my career, one of the vets told me when a superstar or whatever wants to get moved, everybody is on the block. Nobody’s above the program, so all you can do is just keep working on your game and keep figuring it out. All you need is one team to love you. Just your biggest thing you can focus on and figure out is your game, yourself, and your mindset.”
Melton was then asked if it's easier to deal with now that he's a more seasoned player compared to when he was in his first couple of years in the league, but didn't change his answer.
"Nah. Like I said, when a superstar is ready, it's anybody is up in the air. All I can do is take it day by day. That's all you can do in this league. As you guys know, week by week, something could change, something could happen all the time. You got to just keep working, keep getting ready, and when you're time is called, you got to just go."
Despite Melton's words suggesting that everyone is available, the reported trade scenarios likely leave him out of any deal.
The main component for the Warriors would obviously be centered around Jonathan Kuminga and his $22 million contract. If the Warriors were looking to trade for a star like Antetokounmpo, they would need to attach another large contract to make the money match, thus including either Butler or Draymond Green.
Recent reports have indicated that Green is now the one more likely to be traded if something of this scale does occur, flipping from last week's reports that Butler was going to be available. Green's been with the Warriors for 14 years now, but if Butler isn't the one to be traded, then Green is the only other option that can make the math work under the salary restrictions.
In addition to them, players like Buddy Hield, Moses Moody, or Brandin Podziemski could also be potential trade chips for either money-matching or as an offering as solid young players, but the Warriors' most valuable assets are their first-round picks, which is likely the main thing that opposing front offices are focusing on.
Considering Moody and Podziemski seem to have mostly shown what the ceiling of their abilities could be, GMs are much more inclined to take the future picks and take chances on a future draftee becoming a star for the franchise.
Uncertain times continue to lie ahead, and with just five days left before the trade deadline, things will likely be put in motion sooner rather than later.
