Draymond Green weighs in on Victor Wembanyama being a "dirty" player.
In this day and age of social media, everything that happens on an NBA court is clipped and posted online for the world to judge.
Over the course of the playoffs, Victor Wembanyama has experienced the realities of everything being clipped and judged as fans have called him out for plays that don't always look like basketball plays.
Wembanyama infamously called the Spurs an "ethical" basketball team after they defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the regular season, playing on the narrative that the Thunder flop and free throw their ways to win.
The playoffs changed the narrative as clips and 4K footage showed Wembanyama not only flopping and falling more than anyone wanted to admit going into the playoffs, but also pulling hair, shoving opponents, and elbowing them in the throat.
Is Wemby Dirty?
On his podcast, Draymond calld out Wemby for his dirty play.
Referencing a clip where Wemby jumps while looking to set a screen, nearly landing on the leg of OG Anunoby (clip shown below), Draymond questioned why he did that, saying he doesn't know anyone to set a screen like that.
He continued, "Victor Wembanyama is a great player. He's a European player. I've been on record saying European players are dirty. Everyone is like, 'Draymond shouldn't say that.' No, Draymond will f*ck you up. I'm not dirty. It's a completely different thing. Anyone I play against will tell you I'm not dirty. That's a different thing. I will mess you up. Victor Wembanyama is a European player. They are a bit dirty. I will mess you up because you deserve to get jacked up. Completely different thing than doing sneaky, dirty stuff. I don't know that he was trying to take him out, but I know Europeans do things a little differently on their basketball court."
Is Draymond Correct?
Wembanyama didn't help his reputation in the playoffs with how he played, especially in the second round when he elbowed Naz Reid in the throat.
It also didn't help that he didn't face too many repercussions for his actions throughout the playoffs, avoiding suspension for the elbow to Reid and not having a flagrant assessed when he blatantly shoved Jalen Brunson across the face.
Calling Wemby "dirty" would seem to be a stretch for any fan who only judges on clips, but Draymond's experience on the court and playing against guys who would certainly know can't be ignored.
