Draymond Green dismissed recent claims about Stephen Curry by explaining why leadership and personality cannot simply be replaced.

Draymond Green has heard enough of the hypothetical arguments diminishing Stephen Curry’s importance to the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty.

Green defended his longtime teammate while responding to recent conversations involving former Warriors guard Monta Ellis and former NBA guard Jeff Teague.

Ellis initially argued that Golden State could have won the same championships if the franchise had traded Curry instead of him in 2012. Teague strongly rejected that assertion, saying Ellis was never better than Curry and would not have fit the Warriors’ championship system in the same way.

Green took issue with the broader discussion because he believes it treats championship construction like a simple exchange of basketball talent.

“That’s just not how you win championships,” Green said. “You don’t win championships by, ‘Ah, man, move this player and this player.’ It’s not just the basketball. It’s the makeup of the person, and how does that guy lead?”

More than shooting and scoring

Curry has been the central figure in Golden State’s four championships since 2015. His shooting transformed NBA offense, but Green argued that Curry’s impact extends beyond statistics and on-court skills.

Leadership, personality and the willingness to create space for teammates helped shape the Warriors’ culture. Curry shared the spotlight with Kevin Durant, allowed Green to function as a primary facilitator and accepted a motion offense that depended on constant movement without the ball.

Those qualities cannot be measured by simply comparing two guards’ scoring averages.

“I think these statements are null and void and, like, kind of irrelevant,” Green said. “I think it also takes away what Steph Curry is as a leader, and quite honestly, that’s just not how it goes.”

Curry and Ellis played together for three seasons before Golden State traded Ellis to the Milwaukee Bucks in March 2012. The Warriors committed to Curry, selected Green later that year and eventually built the core that changed the franchise.

History settled the debate

There was legitimate uncertainty surrounding Curry at the time of the Ellis trade because of his recurring ankle injuries. Golden State nevertheless chose the younger guard and was rewarded with one of the most successful eras in NBA history.

Curry became a two-time NBA MVP, the league’s career leader in 3-pointers and the foundation of championships in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.

Green and Klay Thompson were essential to those teams, while Durant became the deciding force for two titles. None of their accomplishments, however, makes Curry interchangeable.

That was the heart of Green’s response.

Winning four championships required more than placing talented players beside one another. It required a leader capable of connecting different personalities, adjusting his game and remaining the center of the organization through constant change.

Ellis was a gifted scorer who produced several strong seasons in Golden State. Green’s point was that individual ability does not guarantee the same team history.

The Warriors did not merely choose Curry’s basketball skills. They chose the person who ultimately defined their dynasty.
