Is Draymond Green helping out the Golden State Warriors?
Draymond Green has been one of the key pieces of the Golden State Warriors dynasty, winning four championships alongside Steph Curry and Klay Thompson with Steve Kerr serving as the head coach.
Green helped establish a championship culture in the Bay Area with his vocal leadership, all-world defense, and ability to get Curry and Thompson open shots with his screening and passing.
Though his numbers have slipped over the years as he and Curry have aged, and the roster around him has always played to his strengths, he's still considered one of the most important players to the franchise.
With Steve Kerr returning for at least two more seasons and Curry under contract for at least one more season, a decision on Draymond looms with his player option.
Draymond's Decision
Draymond can exercise his player option for next season, which would pay him $27.6 million. Execerising his player option would make him an unrestricted free agent in the 2027 offseason.
He could also opt out and sign a larger contract for a shorter term, or a smaller contract for a longer term.
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, Draymond is expected to pick up his player option.
“That would immediately make Green one of the most flexible salary-matching pieces if they dip into the trade market," writes Slater.
It is unclear if the Warriors are looking to move on from Draymond or how much interest he has in playing for another team, but a $27 million expiring contract is a valuable trade chip should the Warriors try to get in a deal.
Will They Trade Draymond?
Likely not in the offseason. The Warriors seem more likely to give it one more shot with Curry, Draymond, and Kerr before fully moving on from their core that lost Klay to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 offseason.
Jimmy Butler, who is on an expiring contract worth $56 million, is more likely to be moved in the offseason as he could net a return of two rotation players. Butler is going to miss the majority of the 2026-27 season after suffering a torn ACL in January.
If the Warriors aren't in a strong playoff position by the trade deadline, then Draymond might be moved elsewhere, whether the team looks more towards the future, or tries to acquire a bigger piece that helps strengthen their championship hopes next to Curry.
Until then, Draymond will remain with the Warriors in hopes of one last ride.
