Kevon Looney played his first game against the Golden State Warriors since signing with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Kevon Looney was a fixture on the court of Chase Center for a decade and was a fundamental piece during the most successful era of Golden State Warriors basketball ever.

He won three championships in Golden State, filling in at center while Steph Curry and Klay Thompson set the NBA world on fire from three-point range, and Draymond Green enforced his will on the court.

That all changed this past offseason when Looney signed a two-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, departing from the Warriors for the first time in his career. Saturday's game between the Warriors and the Pelicans was the first time that Looney found himself playing opposite the Warriors in his career, and he did so in the stadium he called home.

Looney Returns to Chase Center

Looney was treated to a hero's welcome in the Bay for his homecoming game with a warm reception by fans and a tribute video the Warriors put together for him detailing all his accomplishments during his time in Golden State. Gary Payton II, who played alongside Looney for four seasons, spoke on the impact that Looney had with the Warriors after the game.

“Loon was the heart and soul of this team for 10 years. You know the Bay loves him. It's where he started," Payton said (via 95.7 The Game). "City knows, community knows what Loon is and what Looney means to this city and this town. Just give him his flowers back is what he deserves."

The Pelicans Are Trending Down

Looney's new surroundings in New Orleans have certainly been less cheery than the success he enjoyed in his career. The Pelicans are 3-18, the second-worst record in the entire NBA. There's still plenty of basketball left in the season, but it would take a miracle for the Pelicans to even approach the playoffs at this rate, and the season already seems a forgone conclusion.

Looney's performance this season appears to be following the trajectory of the Pelicans' overall performance. through 10 games and six stars, Looney is averaging 2.6 points per game, his lowest average since his sophomore season in the NBA, while also averaging 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.

Still, no matter his current location or his current performance, nothing will be able to take away the Bay's fond feelings for him. Looney etched his name in Warriors' legend for his contributions to one of the greatest dynasties in the modern NBA, and his reception Saturday night proved that.
