With less than three and a half weeks until the trade deadline, the rumors have continued to swirl as teams look to either strengthen their current roster or build for the future. The Golden State Warriors have been in the center of many of these rumors, but today, they'll put that out of mind and face the team that got trade season started.
This past Wednesday, the Atlanta Hawks traded Trae Young. The point guard had been their face of the franchise since they acquired him on draft night in 2018, but that era has now ended as the Hawks sent him away to the Washington Wizards.
They're 19-21 on the season, but in their first official game with Young off the roster, the Hawks dominated the Nuggets. With how injured Young has been this season, it's not too different a team that's trotting out there, and the Warriors will need to play a solid game to maintain the momentum they've built on their homestand.
The Warriors have enjoyed good health nearly across the board as of late, and that trend continues with their injury report today.
Once again, Seth Curry, LJ Cryer, and Malevy Leons are the only three players listed on the injury report. Cryer and Leons continue to excel in the G-League for the Santa Cruz Warriors as the regular season begins. Cryer is averaging 23 points and 7 assists, while Leons is posting 14 points and 6 rebounds, but with the Warriors currently maxed out on roster spots, they'll continue to develop in the G-League this year, unless a trade opens up some spots.
Curry, on the other hand, continues to recover from sciatica. It's an issue that hampered Al Horford for much of the early season, and with the consistency that Steve Kerr seems to have found with his second unit, it doesn't seem like the Warriors will want to rush Curry back anytime soon.
For the Hawks, their injury report was a bit more filled than the Warriors', and shows that they could be down two starters for this matchup at Chase Center.
Former No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher is listed as out with left knee inflammation. The second-year forward had only missed three games all year heading into this week, but sat out the Denver game on Friday and will miss his second-straight game tonight.
The other starter in danger of sitting out is Kristaps Porzingis. The 2024 NBA champion with the Boston Celtics came over to the Hawks as part of a three-team trade this summer, but has played in just 17 games this year due to a variety of injuries and illnesses. This time around, it's listed as left Achilles tendinitis. Though Porzingis played the two games prior to Friday, he did sit out the Nuggets game with this injury, so it'll be a matter of how much he's recovered since then.
Whether or not Porzingis plays changes little about the Hawks' identity as a team. Led by Jalen Johnson and a handful of quality role players, they're a competent team that the Warriors need to focus against to pull out a third-straight victory.
