Can the Golden State Warriors actually get LeBron James?

The Golden State Warriors are looking to get back to at least the Western Conference Finals, but they're going to need some help to do so.

The Warriors failed to make the playoffs this past season, losing in the second play-in game to the Phoenix Suns. The Warriors were in a solid playof position up until January when they lost Jimmy Butler to an ACL injury, and then lost Steph Curry for a month due to a knee injury.

The two injuries caused the Warriors to slip all the way to tenth in the standings, forcing them to win two play-in games to make the playoffs. They defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in the first play-in game, but lost the second.

Is LeBron James A Realistic Option?

The Warriors have been linked to LeBron James throughout the offseason, with reports saying that Steph Curry will meet with LeBron at some point in the offseason to potentially discuss coming to the Bay.

A new article on The Athletic saw Dan Woike and Nick Friedell debate how realistic LeBron to the Warriors could be.

“I think the idea of playing with his friends and contemporaries would be appealing to him. He’s a generation older than most of today’s NBA players. Being around people his age whom he’s known, competed against and respected for more than a decade would have real appeal. And let’s not forget LeBron and Steph’s stirring gold-medal-winning experience in Paris. All of that is why he could consider it," wrote Woike.

Friedell added, “Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy, Jr. said Wednesday that the hope is that his team gets younger over the summer, not older, but he did leave the door open for adding more veteran talent if the opportunity presents itself. Even if LeBron would enjoy playing with Steph and Draymond, why would he go to a team that doesn’t have a realistic chance to contend?”

LeBron, assuming he returns for a 24th season, will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. It's unclear how much money he would be looking for, but the Warriors best offer would be the $15 million mid-level exception. The Lakers can offer him the most money, but it's unknown if they want to bring him back for another season or look to move forward with the duo of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

A Realistic Chance To Contend?

If LeBron is lookig for a realistic chance to contend, his options are going to be limited unless he's willing to take less money. Any team that trades for him as a sign-and-trade will have to give up an asset that is going to weaken the team.

The Lakers looked like a contender until injuries to Luka and Reaves derailed things, but even then there were questions about how close they were to the Oklahoma City Thunder given how the regular season matchups went between the two teams.

A team with Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Draymond Green that is coached by Steve Kerr is a playoff team. Once the playoffs start, it's all about health and matchups. The Warriors haven't had a lot of injury luck the past two seasons, but if they can stay healthy, all they need is a chance.
