Will Karl-Anthony Towns head to the Golden State Warriors?
The Golden State Warriors have consistently chased stars in recent seasons, hoping to land the likes of Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Paul George, or Kawhi Leonard.
None of their attempts ended up working out, but they did snag Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat in 2025, which has worked when he’s been healthy.
With the way things change in the NBA, the Warriors will have plenty of opportunities to make another big acquisition before Steph Curry ends up riding into the sunset and calling it a career.
Their big splash could be all the way across the country, as Karl-Anthony Towns’ future with the New York Knicks is up in the air after the team announced that they were suspending negotiations with him until a later date.
Towns has one year left on his contract before deciding on his player option worth $61 million in the 2027 offseason.
Kendrick Perkins Speaks
On ESPN's First Take, former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins said that if he were Towns, he’d be looking to join Steph Curry in Golden State.
Perkins said that if he were Towns, he’d have a problem with the Knicks and how they have handled negotiations after he helped deliver a championship to the team.
Brad Penner-Imagn ImagesThe Knicks acquired Towns ahead of the 2024-25 season from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Donte DiVincenzo and Julius Randle. They have made the Eastern Conference Finals in both seasons with Towns before winning the championship this past season.
Can The Warriors Make It Work?
While it’s easy to just place Towns on the Warriors, there are plenty of other factors at play, notably how the Warriors can get it done.
They will clear $83 million off their books next offseason when Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler become unrestricted free agents. They could have up to $64 million in cap space depending on their decisions with Kristaps Porzingis, who has a player option, but only $3 million of his $20 million guaranteed, and Brandin Podziemski did sign a big extension coming off his rookie deal.
There’s always a chance that the Warriors pull the trigger early and make a play to acquire Towns during the season, using Butler and his contract along with multiple first round picks as their trade chip.
Whether or not the Knicks would want Butler would be the question there.
While Towns to Golden State makes a lot of sense, especially in terms of playstyle, there is a long way to go before it gets to that point.
