What went wrong for the Golden State Warriors?

On Friday, LeBron James announced that he would be joining the Philadelphia 76ers for his 24th NBA season.

At the start of free agency, LeBron informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not be returning to the team after eight seasons, saying he wanted to play "meaningful" and "competitive" basketball. He now joins Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown in Philadelphia for a chance to bring the city its first championship since 1983.

The Golden State Warriors were one of eight teams on LeBron's shortlist and were linked to LeBron early in the offseason, even before free agency officially began, due to his friendship with Draymond Green and the chance to unite with the other greatest player of this generation, Steph Curry.

What Went Wrong?

According to Anthony Slater of ESPN, LeBron prioritized winning a championship in 2027, which left the Warriors out in the cold.

After LeBron made his decision to leave the Lakers, his agent, Rich Paul, went on his Game Over podcast and listed eight teams on the whiteboard that were potential destinations for LeBron: the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Of those eight two, only the Warriors and Heat didn't make the playoffs last season.

Miami added Giannis Antetokounmpo in the offseason. The Warriors did not.

While the Warriors had the advantage of Draymond's friendship and the formula of Curry and Steve Kerr, their roster was the furthest from championship contention of all the potential destinations.

What's Next?

The Warriors now have to re-sign Draymond Green, who is an unrestricted free agent after declining his player option. He declined the option in hopes of freeing up more money for the team to sign LeBron.

In bringing back Draymond, the Warriors' starting lineup will likely be Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Yaxel Lendeborg, Draymond, and Kristaps Porzingis, with De'Anthony Melton, Gui Santos, and Al Horford as top reserves off the bench. They could bring back Gary Payton II, who is an unrestricted free agent.

The team is hampered by injuries to Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, both of whom would be key rotation pieces if they weren't sidelined for at least the first half of the season.

There isn't a free agent on the level, and certainly at the price, of LeBron that remains available. They also don't have much trade capital.

The best the Warriors can do for the rest of this offseason is maybe add another low-cost depth player and just hope the team is healthy this upcoming season.
