Steph Curry Could Benefit From Waiting to Sign New Warriors Contract

One of the talking points surrounding the Golden State Warriors that has gone under the radar is the fact that guard Stephen Curry is extension-eligible. Curry has yet to sign a new deal, but there’s a chance there’s some strategy behind waiting to get it done. 

Steph Curry is going into this season in the last year of his deal, and he and the Warriors' front office have some options in terms of how they want to approach getting an extension. 

Curry is 38 years old and still clearly the Warriors' best player. When healthy, he changes the dynamic of the roster and how teams defend them, and both sides could be looking to continue that. 

It’s clear that Curry and the Warriors have a strong relationship, and they are not willing to let him go play for another franchise. 

Since Curry is 38, it leaves him limited in how many years he can sign for. He can sign a three-year deal, and the contract would be affordable, but signing longer could make Curry a big cap hit, and with the Warriors' state of the franchise, that’s something they may be trying to avoid. 

What could happen is that both sides can wait until Stephen Curry is a free agent in 2027 to get a deal done, and that could allow for more financial flexibility once they figure out a contract. 

If Curry becomes a free agent and extends with Golden State, it could go two ways. He could not take the max salary and leave some money for the Warriors to use. The front office has time to construct a real plan to rebuild, and they could convince him to do this. 

If Curry wants the most amount of money he can get, he could add a third year to his contract, and his deal could be more than $200 million. 

No matter how they approach it, Stephen Curry is still going to be part of the Warriors’ plans for the coming years. He can still play at a very high level, and while durability could be an issue, the important part is that he’s healthy in the playoffs. 

The Warriors have yet to draft a player who is truly the centerpiece of the team long-term, but once they find their next star, having Curry beside him could be impactful to his development. 

The front office has some time to think about how they’re going to approach their rebuild before Curry becomes a free agent, so the focus could be on the future for the Warriors.
