The Golden State Warriors matched up against the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night with a chance to get to .500 and get their season back going in the right direction. After starting the year 4-1, with wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, it's been rough since then. While they had a chance to pull out the win, they came up just short.
Phoenix walked away as the winners on Thursday night, with Jordan Goodwin knocking in a game-winning free throw as Golden State couldn't convert with less than a second on the clock in the 99-98 loss. Despite 31 points from Jimmy Butler and a strong 18 points from Brandin Podziemski, Golden State's situation only gets worse with this loss.
After the game, a contest in which he scored an underwhelming 15 points in 33 minutes of action, Steph Curry was up front and honest with the team's current situation, now 13-15 on the season.
"[We] obviously aren’t a good team right now because our record says," Curry said after the game. He went on to note that the team is seeing that sense of urgency with how they've started the year, but also looked at the brighter side of things.
“Feeling this pain right now and searching … could be a good thing if we do something about it," he added.
Neither team shot well at all, with Golden State being below 40% from the field and below 30% from three-point range. However, it was the Warriors' starting lineup leading that lackluster three-point shooting display, going a combined 7-for-32. The main issue, though, was their ball security, with 20 turnovers coming in a variety of different ways.
Golden State was seemingly gifted a bad game from Devin Booker, until the star guard turned it around in the second half en route to a 25-point performance, joined by Dillon Brooks, who added 24 of his own.
When it comes down to fixing this Warriors team, they'll be faced with the dilemma of whether they should go all-in for a guy like Trey Murphy or even Giannis Antetokounmpo if he's available, or stay put and make a minor move to avoid mortgaging their future. The trade deadline is less than two months away, and the Warriors will have a tough decision to make before it comes around.
