Steph Curry speaks on his contract situation.
At the age of 38, Steph Curry is closer to the end of his career than he is to the beginning.
Drafted by the Golden State Warriors with the seventh pick in the 2009 draft, Curry has not only become a franchise icon, he’s become one of the most transformative players in the league, reinventing what it means to be a shooter and influencing an entire generation with his range.
Curry’s legacy is already cemented in Golden State and in the NBA, but every great player who is still playing at a high level wants to compete until the bitter end.
For Curry, he’s continued to be the rock for the Warriors despite a lack of playoff success over the last four seasons.
He is only in the final year of his contract, and unless an extension is agreed to in the next year, he will become a free agent in the 2027 offseason.
Steph Curry Speaks
Speaking to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, Curry provided an update on his future with the team.
“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen. The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season, and the fact that the team we’re coming back with has a lot of familiarity. Hopefully we can be healthy and just have a chance to show what we’re capable of, myself included, missing so many games last year,” he said.
Curry is eligible to sign a two-year, $136.7 million maximum contract extension.
The Warriors have attempted to add pieces around Curry in recent years, being rumored to acquire the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard, but have missed out with the exception of trading for Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat in 2025.
They didn’t make a big splash in the 2026 offseason, instead running back a team that finished tenth in the West, but hoping chemistry and health pay off.
Should Warriors Fans Be Worried?
Until the extension is signed, there is going to be reason to worry.
Curry may have the intention and desire to finish in Golden State, but as long as he’s playing at a high level, chances are he also wants to compete for a championship. If the Warriors continue to be a Play-In team, there is always a chance that he opts to explore his options in free agency or entertains the idea of being traded.
The Warriors will be under pressure and in the microscope this season if they aren’t competitive and Curry doesn’t re-sign, with chatter of his potential exit growing louder.
