Steph Curry Gives Update on Sneaker Free Agency After Leaving Under Armour cover image

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry gave a timely update on his life as a sneaker free agent

Ever since Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry shockingly entered sneaker free agency earlier this month, the entire NBA community has been paying close attention to what the two-time MVP and four-time champion has on his feet each time he exits the tunnel and steps onto the floor.

Curry has already impressed with some of the deep cuts he’s already pulled out, including “Royal” Nike Air Foamposite Ones, special Oregon Ducks Jordan Retro 3 PEs, and even his teammate Jimmy Butler’s signature shoe with Chinese footwear giant Li-Ning. Curry typically only breaks the shoes out for warmups, but he wore Butler’s all game against Portland on Friday.

Unfortunately, Curry’s nod to his teammate didn’t result in a win for the Warriors on Friday. The Warriors led by as many as 11 points at one juncture and were still unable to push themselves to the finish line, falling to a disappointing 9-9 overall this season despite receiving sizeable hype to make a splash in the Western Conference this season.

Curry seems to be very intentional about his sneaker selection as well, aligning his chosen pair with the Warriors’ gameday location. When the Warriors were in Orlando to face the Magic earlier this week, Curry pulled out a pair of black and white Reebok Shaqnosis sneakers.

When asked about his sneaker selection after Thursday’s game, Curry explained that his new life as a sneaker free agent has afforded him a unique opportunity to pay respect to some of the players and locations that have shaped his journey as both a person and a player. However, Curry made sure to clarify that he still has a soft spot for his own signature sneaker as well.

Having Fun With It

“I'm just having fun, enjoying, like I said, paying tribute to certain guys, different cities, different themes and all of that,” Curry said. “I said I'm excited about the future. This is the first time I've worn something other than my own shoes, but I still love my shoes too.”

The Warriors are in action again at home on Monday against the Utah Jazz, so it will be interesting to see if Curry breaks out another pair in honor of a teammate or even his opponent on the other side. It will be even more interesting to see if the Warriors are able to get back above .500 against a Jazz team that will surely be picking at the top of the draft lottery in June.
