The Golden State Warriors were coming off one of the worst defeats of the year. On Sunday afternoon, they squandered a seven-point lead with under 2 minutes remaining and eventually lost in overtime to the Toronto Raptors, 141-127. A landslide of turnovers and offensive rebounds allowed led to the huge disparity in the final minutes, and halted much of the momentum the Warriors had garnered over the course of their three-game winning streak.
However, they did not get much time to dwell on the loss, as the Warriors had to make the quick trip down to Brooklyn to face the Nets on Monday evening. Despite the Nets' preseason outlook painting them as one of the lesser teams in the NBA, the month of December has been a change of pace for the Brooklyn squad, as the Nets have gone 7-3 heading into this game.
It was a back-and-forth affair throughout, as both teams battled back from large leads on either side. However, the Warriors eventually came through in the fourth quarter with excellent defense and a focused offense to pick up the win, 120-107.
Steph Curry's long, storied career has gifted him multiple milestones throughout the first couple of months of the season, and he earned yet another one on Monday evening.
Just two games after Curry surpassed 26,000 regular-season points in his career on Christmas Day against the Mavericks, Curry overtook an NBA legend for No. 21 on the all-time points leaderboard: Kevin Garnett.
Garnett's career total was 26,071 points. Thanks to Curry's 39-point performance against the Raptors, he came into the Nets game with 26,050, just 21 shy of Garnett. Early in the fourth quarter, Curry passed Garnett in the most fitting way: from beyond the arc.
Curry ended the game with a team-high 27 points with 5 assists and 5 triples. In order to break into the top 20 on the all-time points list, the two-time MVP will now set his sights on John Havlicek's total of 26,395. At his current average of around 29 points per game, the 318-point differential should be breached in about 11 games, though Curry is of course prone to massive explosions in any particular game.
Though Curry led the team in scoring and Jimmy Butler followed close behind with 21 points of his own, it was a concerted team effort that put the Warriors back into the win column.
The bench poured in 58 points, thoroughly outclassing the 27 bench points that Brooklyn put forth. When Curry or Butler rested, the bench did an excellent job picking up the slack and going on runs of their own to retake or extend the lead.
De'Anthony Melton was once again the Warriors' leading plus-minus player. After missing the front end of the back-to-back due to injury management, Melton was a +26, scoring 10 points to go with 8 rebounds and 2 steals.
Will Richard was also fantastic, earning a +22 and chipping in 10 points and 2 steals of his own. Other double-digit scorers off the bench included Trayce Jackson-Davis with 11 and Gary Payton II contributing 10 points in just 10 minutes.
The Warriors will now head to Curry's hometown, Charlotte. An early New Year's Eve game will cap off this three-game road trip and turn the page on 2025.
