Steph Curry was the catalyst behind the new era of basketball. At every level, three-pointers are now a primary emphasis of the game, a far cry from the paint-focused offenses of decades past, and it's largely due to the overwhelming success that Curry has had from beyond the arc in his illustrious NBA career.
His greatness comes in games, shattering just about every three-point record possible for season-long and career marks, but Curry isn't one to shy away from a special challenge, too. The two-time MVP was a staple in All-Star weekend in more ways than one over the course of his career, winning two Three-Point Contests in 2015 and 2021, setting the now-tied record for most points in any round in the Three-Point Contest in 2021, and being a highlight of the weekend in 2023 in his 1v1 special event against WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu.
At All-Star Weekend this year, Curry revealed he'll be entering next year's Three-Point Contest, even though he hasn't participated in the event since he won his second one in 2021.
"100%. I already scheduled it. We're going to bring some people: me, Dame (Lillard), I'm going to try to get Klay (Thompson), Dev (Booker). Let's go."
Lillard is one of three players to ever win the event three times, alongside Larry Bird and Craig Hodges, after he took home the trophy this year. Thompson is a one-time winner, having prevented Curry's repeat attempt in 2016, but the former Splash Brother hasn't competed since 2018. Finally, Booker won in 2018, setting a new record at the time. He also came in a very close second to Lillard this year.
Those four are, without question, some of the best three-point shooters in the game, even as Curry, Lillard, and Thompson get up there in age and start dealing with injuries. The other four that make up the contest will need to be equally as strong to truly make this a star-studded event.
One potential player that can represent the new guard is rookie Kon Knueppel. The Hornets wing came third in this year's contest and has been lights out from three in his first season in the NBA this year at just 20 years old.
The remaining three players could potentially be filled out by going down the list of the rest of the highest points scored in a round: Buddy Hield, Tyrese Haliburton, and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Hield and Haliburton both tied Curry's 31 points for the most in any round in 2023 and 2025, respectively. Neither won in those years, though Hield already picked up a trophy back in 2020. The former is often thought of as one of the best shooters in the league since he was drafted, and though the latter's reputation isn't quite there, Haliburton's ability to get hot in a hurry cannot be overlooked.
Finally, Towns represents the big man contingent that continues to evolve with the times. The Knicks center scored the most points in the final round when he won the 2022 contest with 29 points in the last round. Towns also just won the Shooting Stars Challenge this year alongside Jalen Brunson and Allan Houston, proving he's still ready to go on All-Star Saturdays.
Though this year's All-Star festivities have just concluded, it's clear that next year's will be something to eagerly look forward to.
