The Golden State Warriors seem to have found their groove recently, and there's no surprise that it coincides with a certain impactful guard getting his legs back under him.
De'Anthony Melton made his return from last year's ACL tear at the beginning of December, and though he has mostly struggled to shoot the ball, the defense, ball-handling, and overall energy he provides off the bench have become an integral part of the Warriors' rotation.
Melton proved his worth and more as he found his jumpshot on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Bucks, scoring a season-high 22 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and 5-9 shooting from downtown in the Warriors' 120-113 win.
Following Melton's big performance, Steve Kerr was asked if fans could expect Melton to potentially enter the starting lineup at some point, and he gave praise to the veteran guard's play in his answer.
"He's been out basically for the most part of two years, so we're gonna keep doing what we're doing. Bring him off the bench, keep his minutes climbing. As soon as (athletic trainer) Rick (Celebrini) tells me he can play 30 minutes, then there's gonna be nights where he plays 30 minutes. He's a hell of a player. Obviously, I like our starting lineup right now. We're in a good groove, we're playing pretty well overall, we're solid, and Melt gives us a great option off the bench, and as you've seen, he's closed most of the games here the last couple weeks.
The Warriors have been starting Moses Moody in the backcourt next to Steph Curry, but Moody has only been averaging 24 minutes since being officially set as a starter, and as Kerr said, it's often Melton out there as the other guard with Curry to end games.
Melton was one part of a strong performance from the Warriors' bench in their win over the Bucks. Next to Melton, Al Horford had one of his best games of the season, posting 8 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks in only 19 minutes of action.
Brandin Podziemski and Gui Santos were both +19 and +12, respectively, despite not posting many points of their own, but contributed heavily to the strong bench defense that Kerr praised.
"I thought they were both great. The bench came in and did a really good job. Coach Stackhouse made a couple good adjustments defensively in that first half, which helped us change the game. Those guys defensively were really good. It was a good, solid game."
The Warriors will try to keep the momentum from this win going as they face the Sacramento Kings on Friday night.
