After the Warriors fell to 13-15 on the season following a loss to the Phoenix Suns, Kerr addressed his decision to remove Will Richard from the rotation in recent games.
The rookie guard, who has been one of the more pleasant surprises in Golden State this year, has not played in the last few contests as the team gets healthier.
"The great thing with Will is he gets it," Kerr said. "I went to him last week, told him, I'm going to take him out of the rotation because we're getting healthy, and I want to play my vets and give everybody you know a look."
According to Kerr, Richard took the news in stride and responded simply with, "I got you, coach."
The head coach emphasized that Richard understands his place on the team as a rookie and that his time will come back around.
The 56th overall pick out of Florida has made a real impact in his first NBA season, which makes Kerr's decision even more difficult.
Richard is averaging 8.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while appearing in 23 of the team's 28 games so far.
He started 12 games earlier in the season, including four of the five games Stephen Curry missed with a quad injury, and even exploded for a career-high 30 points against the Sacramento Kings in early November.
The 22-year-old brings maturity and championship experience from his time at Florida, where he helped the Gators win the 2025 national title.
Kerr has praised Richard's stability, decision-making, and shooting ability throughout the season.
With the team hovering around .500 and sitting ninth in the Western Conference, Kerr has committed to a starting lineup of Curry, Moses Moody, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, and Quinten Post.
The coach is prioritizing veteran experience as Golden State tries to find consistency after using 15 different starting lineups through their first 27 games.
Richard currently finds himself behind Curry, Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and Buddy Hield in the backcourt pecking order. Jonathan Kuminga and Gary Payton II have also seen limited minutes recently as Kerr shuffles his rotation.
Despite the temporary setback, Kerr remains a believer in the rookie's future.
He noted that Richard could easily find himself back in the rotation and possibly even start again later in the season as the Warriors continue to navigate a challenging year.
