Steve Kerr discussed the impact of his veterans' leadership on the Warriors' bench.
The Golden State Warriors haven't had their full squad of veterans out on the court at the same time in a long while. Due to a myriad of injuries, both minor and major, the Warriors have had to make do with a mix of young players, two-way players, and the odd veteran whenever they manage to be healthy.
However, even with the veterans constrained to the sidelines, they've still had a positive impact on the game from the bench and the locker room.
Steve Kerr Discusses Impact Of Warriors' Veterans
Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler have both been out for extended periods of time, while Draymond Green has been in and out of the lineup for various reasons. Between the three of them, they have a combined 46 seasons of experience.
Even when they aren't playing, they're still able to impart wisdom and a sense of comfort when they're around, and with Butler recently reuniting with the team in Washington for the first time since he got surgery on his torn ACL, Steve Kerr was shown just how impactful these Warriors veterans can be.
"Just the leadership that Steph provides. Jimmy was here today. Draymond, just the veteran presence that those guys provide is really important to us ... the leadership those guys provide now is crucial for us. Having Steph on the trip just gives us a level of comfort. The guys, they feel better. We all feel better when he's around, even if he's not in uniform."
To know that Curry, Butler, and Green still manage to have such a positive impact on the team, even if it's not a tangible product on the court, shows part of why this team managed to be so successful for so long at the height of the dynasty.
Warriors Jostling For Position In The Play-In
Even with the Warriors' win on Monday against the Washington Wizards, their 5-game losing streak prior to that victory set them back big-time in the Western Conference playoff picture.
The win moved the Warriors to 33-35 on the season. That marks them good for 9th in the conference, now 6 games behind the Suns for the 7th seed and 8 games behind the Nuggets and Timberwolves for the 5th and 6th seeds.
It's an unfortunate departure from the position they were in when Butler and Curry were healthy, but now their attention must turn to capturing the 8th seed in the play-in.
Currently, they are one game behind the Clippers for 8th and just 0.5 games ahead of the Trail Blazers, who are in 10th.
If they can secure the 8th seed, they'd get an opportunity to play for the 7th seed and avoid a first-round matchup with the Thunder, and they'd get a safety net to play one more game to secure the 8th seed. If they end 9th or 10th, they'd have to win a game just for the opportunity to grab the 8th seed, which could prove to be extremely dangerous.
