It was a night to forget on Tuesday when the Golden State Warriors lost in overtime to a Chicago Bulls team that had lost 16 of their last 19 games. The 130-124 final margin doesn't quite reflect their collapse down the stretch that saw an 8-point lead with less than 2 minutes left in regulation dwindle quickly.
One of the few positive things that came out of the game, though, was the return of Kristaps Porzingis. It was his second game in the past three games for the Dubs after he finally got over his mysterious illness, and he contributed in a positive manner.
In 20 minutes of action, the big man was tied for the team lead with 17 points, adding 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 blocks. He was also +4, one of only four players to finish as a positive plus/minus, and though he shot somewhat poorly, going just 5-13 from the field and 2-6 from three, he did sink all five of his free throws.
After the game, Steve Kerr discussed Porzingis' performance and laid out what he liked from the Latvian.
"It's great to have him. You just feel his presence and you see how easily he scores. He had four blocked shots, so it's really great to have him back."
Kerr specifically talked about how Porzingis changes the offense due to the mismatches he can create against smaller defenders.
"He's a guy who can catch with a live dribble and get a shot off pretty easily, and he's a great shooter. He gives us an isolation threat at a time when we don't have Jimmy (Butler) and Steph (Curry). Between Al (Horford) and Kristaps, I really feel like we're able to gain some advantages offensively to draw help and move the ball and get open looks."
As Kerr said, having Horford and Porzingis operating in the middle with their versatile abilities to shoot, score, and pass at their larger statures is extremely valuable to the team.
The major knock against Porzingis in his career has been his lack of consistent availability. For his career, Porzingis has only played more than 70 games in a season once since his rookie season and hasn't played more than 65 games in a season since 2022-23, when he was with the Wizards.
The big man had only played 17 games this season with the Hawks before he was traded to the Warriors, then missed over two weeks after making his Warriors debut due to a mysterious illness.
However, there could be some hope still left, as Porzingis seems to finally be getting at least a little bit healthier than he has been this season. Porzingis was officially cleared to play the Warriors' upcoming game on Friday against the Timberwolves, meaning he'll play two games in a row for the first time in a Warriors uniform.
Of course, there was a two-day break between games for the Dubs, but it's a good trend that Porzingis can at least play at all.
Once he gets consistent playing time and can get into a groove with larger responsibilities, Porzingis could become even more of an asset for the Warriors.
