Steve Kerr gives an update on Kristaps Porzingis.
Kristaps Porzingis was brought in by the Golden State Warriors at the 2026 NBA trade deadline to give the team more championship experience and another outlet for Steph Curry to play off of as the team tried to make a playoff push.
Porzingis battled injuries and health issues throughout his final season in Boston in 2024-25 and one season in Atlanta before the trade to the Warriors, but Golden State felt he was worth the risk in order to move off of Jonathan Kuminga’s contract and add a different look to the lineup.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the health issues of Porzingis have continued to persist, with the team ruling him out for the start of training camp.
Steve Kerr Speaks
Asked by the media about Porzingis, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that they will continue to support him any way they can and that whenever he’s ready, he’ll be ready.
Kerr went on to say that he looks at Porzingis as being day-to-day and that they’ll continue to support him with the performance staff, training staff, and doctors. Porzingis remained in the Bay while the rest of the team traveled to Hawaii for training camp.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesPorzingis played 15 games for the Warriors after they acquired him from the Hawks. He averaged 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 43% from the field and 31% from three-point range.
The Warriors signed him to a two-year, $40 million deal in the offseason with a player option on the second year.
What To Expect From Porzingis
The risk in acquiring Porzingis and re-signing him was always going to be his health, but the Warriors had good reason to believe in him based on how he produced when he was healthy last season.
The team had a +3.9 net rating with him on the floor last year, and he worked well with the main players.
When Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Porzingis were on the court together, Golden State was +32.4. The sample size is extremely small, though, as they played only 16 minutes together.
The numbers were even encouraging when Curry and Draymond weren’t on the floor with Porzingis, who still had a +9.7 net rating with them off.
He seemed to have chemistry with Brandin Podziemski, posting a +10.5 net rating when they were on the court together.
There’s no doubt that Porzingis is still an effective player for the Warriors. He just needs to stay on the floor.
