Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr reminisces on Klay Thompson's time with the team

The Golden State Warriors' dynasty spanning from the mid-2010s to the early-2020s was led by four key figures: Steph Curry, Steve Kerr, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. All four members have been on all four championship rosters, playing their respective roles in helping the team reach the top. Today, just one of the four is no longer on the roster, that being Thompson.

After an interesting season in 2023-24 with Golden State that seemed as though he was trending on the way out, the two sides failed to agree to an extension as he left to join Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on the Dallas Mavericks. Of course, the situation would drastically change in Dallas, as many have been calling for a return to the Bay Area for the legendary shooting guard.

Steve Kerr Speaks On Thompson's Time In Golden State

The Warriors played host to the Mavericks on Christmas Day, it being yet another return to the Bay for Thompson since his departure in 2024. Coming off the bench for the Mavericks, he had seven points in 26 minutes of action, but of course the storylines were all around his time in Golden STate.

Speaking to the media, head coach Steve Kerr reminisced on Thompson's time in Golden State, clearly expressing that he misses the star guard.

“I’ll never get used to seeing Klay on the other side. I miss Klay. Wish he was still here,” Kerr said.

And based on what players like Curry and Green have said, it's clear that isn't a feeling that only Kerr holds.

Klay's Career In Golden State

Thompson will now doubt be considered for the Hall of Fame when it's all said and done, but there's no denying he was often overlooked during his time in Golden State. In his 11 years with the Warriors, he boasted a 41.3% three-point percentage, averaging 19.6 points per game. He earned a pair of All-NBA Third Team honors, as well as All-Defensive Second Team in 2019.

However, playing behind Curry and eventually Kevin Durant, Thompson made sure to play whatever role was needed. Whether it was being a lockdown defender or getting open off-ball, Curry might be the only player in NBA history to have a case as a better off-ball three-point shooter than Thompson.

Now in Dallas, Thompson finds himself stuck on a team that is in between two timelines with veteran stars like Anthony Davis and Kyrie, and now a young star in Cooper Flagg. Thompson is in the second year of his three-year, $50 million contract, and he could very much be acquired by Golden State if they are willing to move the necessary contracts.

Regardless if it's now or later, it seems as though Thompson ending up in Golden State at some point before he hangs it up is likely, especially if Green and Curry are still on the roster.
