Steve Kerr gives an update on Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry.
The Golden State Warriors received an injury scare at open practice on Sunday, but fortunately, everything is going to be okay.
At the open practice, Warriors star Steph Curry had the ball in his hands and looked to make his move, but he slumped over, and play was stopped.
Curry limped away to the locker room. It was originally reported as an ankle injury for Curry.
After practice, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that Curry would be fine, but was dealing with an ankle tweak. The Warriors officially called it an ankle sprain.
Curry’s status for opening night against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, October 21.
Curry’s Injury History
Curry has a history of lower body injuries that have cost him significant chunks or major games in the past two seasons.
He missed over two months at the end of last season with a knee injury, and missed the second round of the 2025 playoffs with a hamstring injury. He also dealt with an ankle injury at various stages of last season.
Curry will turn 39 in March, so he isn’t getting any younger, and the wear and tear on his body has added up over the years with the Warriors going on extended playoff runs that led to four championships and another Finals appearance.
He entered this offseason healthy and was excited about the upcoming season after signing an extension that will keep him in Golden State for at least the next two years.
How Worried Should Fans Be?
Any time Steph is dealing with an injury, fans should be worried.
The Warriors can’t afford to have Steph out for an extended period of time, not with Jimmy Butler also sidelined for the start of the season as he continues to recover and rehab from an ACL injury that he suffered in January.
On many occasions, Curry looks like the entirety of the Warriors offense. While they are expecting a leap from Brandin Podziemski, added Brandon Williams, and have high hopes for Will Richard as a backup point guard, and see the potential in Yaxel Lendeborg, none of those players are Steph Curry.
Kerr saying that Curry is going to be fine is a positive sign for the Warriors and Steph, but they aren’t going to risk him, especially early in the season. They are hoping to return to the playoffs and need him healthy for a potential run in the postseason. That won’t come at the expense of causing him to miss more time early in the year.
