Steve Kerr Addresses Positives And Negatives

After the game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr points out what he liked and didn’t like from the Warriors’ effort in the victory.

“Well 23 turnovers, at least half of them just unforced errors. That’s what we have to clean up, our whole purpose in training camp is to win the game in the margins. You're going to hear me say that a lot. The ball is everything and you just can't make mindless plays in this sport and expect to win at this level. We’ll watch the tape, we’ll probably clip eight or 10 turnovers and show them to the guys on Monday. But I like the effort. We’re getting more organized, we’re getting more spaced, when we’re executing well we’re getting really good shots. Too many mindless possessions that need to be cleaned up.”

The Warriors were officially charged with 21 turnovers to 26 assists, not a number that will win them too many games during the regular season.

Turnovers have often been an issue that has plagued the Warriors, in part due to their heavy movement offense and willingness to look for a better shot. They were tied for the third-most turnovers in the league last season with 15 per game.

Cleaning Up The Turnovers

At this point, it might not be something that the team can clean up. It’s just part of their identity. Even in their historic 73-win season, they finished sixth in the league for the most turnovers per game. They are a team that plays fast and loose with the ball, and while that leads to a lot of offense and quick shots, it can also lead to careless mistakes.

Curry and Draymond aren’t going to change at this point. Brandon Williams, who had five turnovers on Saturday, is going to be encouraged to make high-level passes that might get him in trouble.

Steve Kerr wants them to take better care of the basketball, but it’s a feature, not a flaw in the system at this stage.
