Was Jaylen Brown nearly traded to Golden State?
The Golden State Warriors haven't done much to improve on a team that finished tenth in the Western Conference last season and will start the year with injuries to two key rotation players.
The team re-signed Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and De'Anthony Melton, but lost Quinten Post to the Memphis Grizzlies, who plucked him via restricted free agency.
Draymond Green is also technically still an unrestricted free agent after declining his player option, but all signs point to him re-signing with the team at some point.
The Warriors were heavily in on the LeBron James sweepstakes and may have been one of the last two teams standing, but LeBron ultimately decided to go back to the Eastern Conference, joining the Philadelphia 76ers.
Was Jaylen Brown An Option?
The Boston Celtics shook up the NBA on July 1 when it was announced that they were trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and draft compensation.
Brown was involved in trade talks that would've sent him to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but Boston and Milwaukee couldn't get a deal done. Days after Giannis was traded to the Miami Heat, the Celtics traded Brown to Philadelphia.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Warriors reached out to the Celtics about acquiring Brown, but the Celtics weren't interested in Jimmy Butler or Kristaps Porzingis, along with the draft compensation that would've been required to make a deal.
Could The Warriors Have Done More?
The Warriors had an advantage in that it's doubtful the Celtics wanted to send Brown to a conference rival that just knocked them out of the playoffs. But in terms of assets, the Warriors couldn't offer any player better than Paul George.
Porzingis won a championship with the Celtics in 2024, but he was a luxury on that team with Brown, Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick Holiday. He would've needed a bigger role on the current version of the Celtics. Butler will miss the start of the season coming off ACL surgery, and his lack of three-point shooting doesn't fit the Celtics' profile as George does.
The Warriors could've offered three first-round picks, one more than the Celtics got from the Sixers, but they haven't been keen on parting with first-round picks this offseason.
If the Warriors wanted Brown, they could've given up the necessary draft compensation to get him. Instead, Philadelphia has now created a championship favorite while the Warriors are running back a tenth seed.
