The Golden State Warriors are excited to have Steph Curry back.
The Golden State Warriors got a big piece of business done on Friday night when they locked up Steph Curry on a new two-year deal.
Curry was eligible to sign a two-year, $136.7 million deal, but ended up signing for $116 million, taking $20 million less than his max.
The two-time MVP and four-time NBA Champion is entering his 18th season with the Warriors. He is making $62 million this season before his contract extension kicks in for the 2027-28 season. There is a player option for the 2028-29 season, but all signs point to Curry finishing his career in the Bay.
Mike Dunleavy Jr. Speaks
In the press release put out by the team, Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. expressed his excitement that Steph will remain part of the future in Golden State.
"We couldn't be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors. There has never been a better face to a franchise in professional sports history, both on and off the court, than Stephen Curry with the Warriors,” he said.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesSteph was drafted by the Warriors with the seventh pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. In his 17 seasons with the team, he’s become the greatest shooter in NBA history, setting the record for most career three-pointers in the regular season, postseason, and NBA Finals. He also has the single-season record for most threes made and the most consecutive games with a made three.
For the Warriors, he’s the all-time leading scorer and is the franchise leader in assists, steals, and games played as well.
The Future Of The Warriors
Before the deal was made official, Curry consistently said that he wanted to remain in Golden State, and that the contract negotiations wouldn’t be a distraction throughout the season. He said his main focus was on staying healthy and competing alongside his teammates.
Now, there is no distraction to worry about as he’s locked up for at least the next two seasons.
Taking less money and getting a player option in the second year should give the Warriors even more financial flexibility as they try to remain competitive in a loaded Western Conference. The Warriors have tried to take big swings in free agency and via trade, but not much has worked out.
With Curry under contract, the team will continue to look for the best avenue to try to get at least one more championship for the future Hall of Famer.
