Moses Moody, who started the first two preseason games for the Golden State Warriors, will miss the exhibition season finale on Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers with a calf strain. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters on Thursday that Moody will also be doubtful for the season opener

Last season, Moses Moody was a major contributor for the Golden State Warriors during their run in the postseason. Warriors coach Steve Kerr was looking forward to seeing what Moody could do during the regular season, which begins on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kerr is going to have to wait a few days before that happens, as it was announced on Thursday that Moody will likely miss the season opener as he recovers from a calf injury.

The coach announced the prognosis after practice on Thursday.

“I would say Moses is doubtful for the opener,” Kerr said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “He just hasn't practiced yet, and we're hoping that he gets on the floor maybe Sunday or Monday. But without enough ramp-up time, he's doubtful for the opener.”

Moody's lack of availability further depletes the Warriors guard rotation. De'Anthony Melton is still reconditioning after he had surgery last December to repair a left ACL tear. He is expected to be out until the middle of November, at a minimum. Both have experience playing alongside Stephen Curry in the backcourt and are considered top-notch defenders.

When the Warriors play the Lakers, they are gong to have to come up with a plan to defend Luka Doncic and there is no straight and easy answer as of yet.

Brandon Podziemski has started three games this preseason. He played two alongside Curry in the backcourt. He is a bit on the lighter side and would more than likely be eaten alive by Doncic, who is a big strong player who has a strong move to the hoop. Podziemski would be better working his usual spot in the rotation and not starting.

Kerr could turn to Buddy Hield, who has experience playing with Curry. He would be a bigger, better matchup against Doncic, but has a tendency to get into early foul trouble which could limit his effectiveness.

Hield is usually more productive in short spurts when he comes off the bench and takes on the other team's backups as opposed to going man-to-man with a starter.

Gary Payton II could get to Doncic and might see extended minutes. However the move would affect the spacing on the floor and Kerr might not want that.

With all of that said, Kerr might just turn to rookie second-round pick Will Richard. Kerr believes in Richard and he could make his debut against the former League Most Valuable Player.

“He has great feel,” Kerr said of Richard. “He's a really good cutter. The game flows when he's out there, at both ends. He’s making the right reads and rotations defensively. He’s got a 6-10 wingspan, so he gets his hands on a lot of balls, but it's the reeds that really (stand out).”
