It hasn't been pretty for the Golden State Warriors this season when they're without Steph Curry. This isn't exactly breaking news, but especially without Jimmy Butler to steady things this time around, it turned out to be another disappointing showing from the rest of the Warriors on Tuesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Though the first half was relatively close — the Warriors actually led by 1 at the end of the first quarter and the two teams traded huge runs in the second to make the 76ers' halftime lead just 3 — the second half was simply abysmal. The Warriors scored just 16 points in the third quarter and eventually lost 113-94.
The Warriors are still sitting solid at the 8th-seed, three games ahead of the 9th-seed Clippers that just traded away James Harden for Darius Garland in the NBA's second big trade of the season, but the loss now puts them 3.5 games behind the Suns for the 7th-seed and 4.0 games behind the Lakers and Timberwolves for the 5th-seed.
After the loss, Steve Kerr vented his frustrations and expressed his disappointment in how the Warriors played, even without Curry to lead the way.
"Just a lack of physicality. I'm just disappointed with the overall effort. It was not a game we can repeat, for sure. We've got to bring the juice, bring the energy, and bring the collective competitive spirit necessary to win a game."
When asked if the trade rumors ahead of Thursday's impending trade deadline may have affected the team, Kerr gave an unsure, but potentially affirmative answer.
"Maybe, I don't know. I do think the NBA season is 82 games and you can almost feel the ebbs and flows ... you can almost predict when things are going to go well and they're going to go poorly, just in overall health, mood, vibe. This was not a good vibe for us tonight, and it doesn't matter what the trade chatter is. It's everyone's job to come and bring the energy, bring the fight ... That's the most disappointing thing about tonight's game is that I didn't feel that like I needed to feel it and like we need to feel as a group."
All in all, it was clearly a subpar showing from the Warriors, and even if Curry returns for Thursday's game against the Suns, Kerr will surely want to see better effort and energy from the rest of his squad.
The Warriors had largely beaten their turnover demons after they were, at times, game-losing issues earlier this season. However, as they have in the past few games, they reared their ugly head once again, and in combination with a beating on the boards, allowed the 76ers to own the possession battle.
The Dubs ended up turning the ball over 20 times, which led to 15 76ers points. It's the fourth game in a row the Warriors have had 18 or more turnovers, and the second game in the last four that they've had 20 turnovers.
The Warriors also allowed the 76ers to grab a shocking 25 offensive rebounds, allowing the 76ers to rack up 20 second-chance points. Ultimately, the 76ers ended up taking 15 more field goals and 19 more free throws, though the latter is more so due to the Warriors shooting just 2 free throws the entire night.
No Warrior player scored over 13 points in what ended up being one of the more disappointing losses of the year, even though it's not even a top-5 worst loss of the season in terms of point differential.
The next time the Warriors play on Thursday night, the trade deadline will have passed. Only time will tell if the team will look any different before then.
