The Warriors waived 2025 second-round pick Alex Toohey in order to make space for forward Malevy Leons.
Fresh off back-to-back victories against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls, the Golden State Warriors entered a four-day break. It's a time to rest and reset ahead of their next game on Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
However, the Dubs' front office made sure on Monday that the days off would not be devoid of news. It was announced that the Warriors had signed 6'9 forward Malevy Leons to a two-way contract and waived 2025 second-round pick Alex Toohey in a corresponding move.
Leons Joins Warriors From Thunder's G-League Team
Leons went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft and subsequently signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder as a free agent. The 26-year-old has spent the last two years with the Thunder's G-League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, averaging 11.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 "stocks" a game.
Defense has been Leons' calling card since his college days. At Bradley University, Leons was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 3.0 "stocks" per game in both his senior and graduate seasons.
The Dutch forward has played in 12 G-League games with the Blue this season, averaging a career-high 14.8 points per game while shooting an impressive 43.8% from three and maintaining his gaudy rebounding and defensive numbers.
He'll likely spend much of his time with the Santa Cruz Warriors, especially with Golden State getting healthier, but other injuries or potential trades later in the season could always open the door for Leons to be called up. If he does, expect the Dubs to benefit primarily from his defense and overall size.
Toohey's Season-Ending Injury Ends Time With Warriors
The Warriors selected Toohey No. 52 overall in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, just four slots ahead of Will Richard. However, Toohey has been struggling with injuries since the Summer League.
The waiver announcement was said to be injury-related, and it was reported that Toohey would require season-ending knee surgery.
The 6-foot-8 forward was drafted after his time in the NBL, where he averaged 10.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in the 2024-25 season. The Warriors picked him as a long-term project, hoping that some of the potential he flashed with his frame and style of play would pan out.
In particular, Warrior legend Andrew Bogut was high on his fellow Australian, going on record after the draft to express his confidence in the young rookie.
Toohey could always resign with the Warriors next year after recovering from the knee surgery, especially if the remainder of this season and the offseason shake out in a way that leaves some open roster spots.
