Jimmy Butler may nit be coming back anytime soon.
The Golden State Warriors would already find themselves in a compromising position as far as depth is concerned without any major injuries, but there is a major injury to one of their most crucial players that has been weighing the Warriors down, and could continue to do so after a recent update.
Jimmy Butler suffered a torn ACL during a game against the Miami Heat in January 2026 and underwent surgery in February, giving the Warriors' secondary star ample time to recover from one of the most devastating injuries in sports and while reports in recent weeks have trickled in that Butler is making good progress on his recovery, a speedy return shouldn't be expected.
Per a recent report from Anthony Slater, a return to the floor for Butler by either January or February 2026 is an "optimistic" target date, which leaves room to assume that Butler returning after those February, and thus close to the final third of the season, seems to be more likely.

Slater's report added that the Warriors' are being cautious with Butler's recovery and aren't eager to rush him back, which is certainly a smart approach considering Butler's age and the severity of his injury.
But while taking their time with his recovery is a good thing to ensure that Butler can actually stay on the court once he returns, his extended absence also puts the Warriors into a compromising position.

Brandin Podziemski and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg are likely going to be major assets to the Golden State's offensive game plan, but Butler's proven impact on the floor is something that the Warriors anticipated on relying on.
Little Scoring Depth

Robert Edwards-Imagn ImagesThe Warriors have found themselves in a difficult spot as far as the extent of their talent goes and the absence of Butler is surely felt. Golden State finished the season 2025-26 season 12-26 after Butler's injury on their way to a 37-45 overall finish and a quiet offseason hasn't done much to alleviate their depth concerns.
There's also the question of what Butler's production will be like after he makes his return and if he'll be able to match his past numbers, but that is a question that can only be answered once he's actually back on the floor, so the Warriors might not have that answer until months into the season.
