The Golden State Warriors suffered a disappointing defeat on Tuesday evening, dropping to 30-28 on the season after falling to the New Orleans Pelicans, 113-109. It was an offensive tragedy in the first half that led to just 39 points, and though the Warriors put up 70 in the second half, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Alas, they'll barely have time to review the film from that game, let alone get in a practice or much shootaround, as the Warriors had to take a quick flight over to Memphis and prepare to face off against the Grizzlies at 4:30 PST on Wednesday.
They'll need to figure out a way to manage with their injury report looking similarly full as yesterday.
The Warriors' injury luck hasn't been great this season, and it's starting to pick back up again, especially with this game being the second night of a back-to-back.
The usual suspects are on the list: Steph Curry, Kristaps Porzingis, Jimmy Butler, and Seth Curry. All of them were expected to be out for various reasons, and Porzingis is the only one with a short-term injury. However, the illness he's dealing with caused him to stay at home instead of coming on this two-game road trip.
The most important on the list, then, is De'Anthony Melton, who is listed as out for knee injury management. Melton's absence was already planned out by Steve Kerr, who staggered Melton and Al Horford's availabilities between the two games of the back-to-back. With Melton still coming back to full strength from the ACL injury he suffered last year and Horford looking to manage his workload at his veteran age, it makes sense to split their games on back-to-backs.
It creates an issue nonetheless. Though Horford has been extremely valuable, Melton was a big reason why the Warriors even got close to winning yesterday, scoring a game-high 28 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. It was Melton's fourth game in a row with at least 17 points, and it's no doubt an offensive loss that the Warriors will likely need to make up for with a team effort.
Draymond Green is also out due to back injury management. He missed Sunday's game against the Nuggets and played last night. With Horford back in the mix for the big men rotation, it makes sense to sit Green for some rest and recovery, but it means just another starter down for the count for the Warriors.
The Grizzlies aren't exactly faring better on the injury report, though.
Six players are listed as out for Memphis: Ja Morant, Zach Edey, Cedric Coward, Santi Aldama, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Brandon Clarke — all players that could normally be in the Grizzlies' rotation, if not starting.
Morant's absence isn't a surprise, considering he's played just two games since January 3rd, as well as Edey, who hasn't played since December, and the absence of those two as the best players on the team is definitely felt.
In fact, the only one of those players who's truly dealing a day-to-day type of issue is the rookie, Coward. He's missed the last four games with a knee issue since playing against the Warriors on February 9th.
The Grizzlies aren't exactly pretty at 21-35, especially considering they lost to break the Kings' 16-game losing streak on Monday, but the Warriors need a rebound win badly after losing to the Pelicans. They cannot afford to coast and get taken by surprise by the Grizzlies tonight.
