The Golden State Warriors' season has been a rather rocky one, to say the least, as expectations were set sky high after their 4-1 start to the year, which featured wins over the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers. However, a mix of injuries and inconsistencies now has the Warriors entering Sunday's contest against the Portland Trail Blazers just 13-13.
Portland is a familiar opponent for the Warriors this season, as they've lost the first two games against them. With two games remaining in the regular season series, Golden State can still even things up, and they'll have the odds in their favor on Sunday, even though they'll be facing them on the road.
Golden State has seen several stars and key players sidelined throughout games this season, but it's starting to look positive as Al Horford (nerve) is the only player listed on the injury report for them, but is ruled OUT.
Horford was the team's prized offseason addition, coming over from the Boston Celtics, where he played a crucial part in the team's 2024 NBA Finals run. A high-IQ veteran with strong defense and a quality three-point shot, Horford has been nothing close to that this season, averaging just 5.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 32.1% from the field and 29.8% from three.
So even though he's listed on the team's injury report, the team will be able to make do with Quinten Post, who's averaging 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game over his last three appearances. His shooting inside the arc has been less than desirable, but he's shooting better than 40% from three over this stretch.
While the Warriors just have one injury, that's nothing compared to what the Trail Blazers' report looks like.
Players listed as OUT include Scoot Henderson (hamstring), Jrue Holiday (calf), Damian Lillard (Achilles), Matisse Thybulle (thumb), and Blake Wesley (foot).
The remaining players' statuses are QUESTIONABLE, with those being Donovan Clingan (leg), Robert Williams III (illness), and Yang Hansen (face).
With the Blazers' guard depth heavily limited, the playmaking duties for Deni Avdija have only increased, as Portland's star forward is averaging 8.2 assists per game in the month of December heading into Sunday's contest.
This matchup against the Trail Blazers is an important game for Golden State to get back on track, especially with them at 13-13 and having some tough contests ahead of them against the Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic.
Tip-off at the Moda Center in Portland is set for 9:00 p.m. EST.
