The Warriors are reported to pursue LeBron James and one other superstar this offseason.
While the Golden State Warriors try to stay afloat in the Western Conference and gear up for a postseason run, some people are turning their heads to what could go down in the offseason.
With the health questions surrounding Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody in terms of when they're coming back from their major injuries, things are a bit murky in terms of the outlook of the Warriors, but there are a few certain things. Players like Kristaps Porzingis, De'Anthony Melton, and Quinten Post will need new contracts if the Warriors want to bring them back.
Additionally, the Warriors will essentially have the 2026-27 season as a final hurrah, considering the only players currently under contract beyond next season are Moody and Gui Santos. With Steph Curry leading the way at 38 years old, this may be the final offseason the Warriors can make something happen before a potentially big shakeup.
Warriors Reportedly Could Pursue A Couple Of Superstars
One thing that has been circulating in fans' perception of the Warriors is their roster composition. Ever since Kevin Durant left after the 2018-19 season, the Warriors have only had two players not named Steph Curry make the All-Star Team: Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins in 2022.
However, neither of them are your typical All-Star players, especially considering a large reason why Wiggins made it was for his popularity in voting, rather than his performance.
Jimmy Butler was supposed to rectify that, but his injury ultimately prevented it. Thus, Curry has once again been left without a major co-star to play alongside, all while he continues to get older and potentially faces regression, though we haven't seen it yet.
There could be some hope this summer, though. Recent reporting from NBA reporter Marc Stein indicated the Warriors could be pursuing a couple of big names.
"The Warriors made what has been described as a determined trade run at the Clippers' Kawhi Leonard in the final hour before the Feb. 5 trade buzzer sounded under the belief that Leonard might be unexpectedly available after LA agreed to ship Ivica Zubac to Indiana. The Clippers ultimately balked then, but it is reasonable to presume that Golden State will investigate that possibility once again."
In addition to Leonard, who is having one of the best seasons of his career, a certified legend may also be an option for Golden State.
"The Warriors are likewise routinely described by rival teams as one of the few credible destinations for LeBron James' 24th NBA campaign if James and the Lakers indeed part ways after eight seasons together. 'It has some legs,' one league source said of the LeBron link to the Warriors."
If either of these rumors turns true, it would be an enormous boost to the Warriors' championship outlook, even if James is set to turn 42 years old in the middle of next season.
The Warriors aren't likely to make a big run in this year's playoffs, even if they can manage to get out of the Play-In as a likely 9 or 10 seed. Time is running out on how long Curry will be a top player in the league, but one of these moves could be a potential game-changer.
