The Golden State Warriors could be going after free agents to fill out their backcourt this summer.
The Golden State Warriors are expected to be an active team in free agency this summer. Golden State will be without Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody for a significant amount of time next season, and they will need players to come in and temporarily fill their roles.
One spot on the team that could use some extra help is the backcourt. Jimmy Butler III is a pivotal piece of the team who can play both shooting guard and small forward, but without him, that leaves a hole in the two-guard spot.
It's being reported by NBA insider Jake Fischer that Golden State are expected to target a free agent guard this summer, and Collin Sexton and Anfernee Simons could be names to watch for.
In 2025-2026, the starting guards for the Warriors were Stephen Curry and Brandin Podziemski, but after that, De'Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II were the other options off the bench.
Curry also missed a lot of time last season, and Brandin Podziemski had his ups and downs, making the Warriors' backcourt unstable for much of this past season.
What Could Collin Sexton or Anfernee Simons Bring to the Warriors?
Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesBoth Sexton and Simons spent time on the Chicago Bulls last season and finished the season with similar stats. These are two guards who came off the bench and can give you around 15 points per game.
This past season, the Warriors didn't get as much production from their backcourt off the bench as both players were able to outperform the likes of De'Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II.
The two upcoming free agents were also better shooting the ball from three than the Warriors reserves. De'Anthony Melton shot just 29 percent from three-point range in 2025-2026, and in today's NBA that's too low of a number if you want success from the perimeter.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesAnfernee Simons was much more efficient from three, shooting 38.5 percent from long range, while Collin Sexton shot 40 percent. If the Warriors can find better shooters to come off the bench for them next season, they could see immediate improvement on offense as a whole.
The team could also benefit from Stephen Curry being more durable next season, but as an aging veteran player, that's never a guarantee. Finding guards must be a priority for Golden State if they want to find their way back to the playoffs.
Golden State has been linked to LeBron James this offseason as well, and he is one of the few forwards in today's game that can direct traffic and help the Warriors offensively.
