A new report regarding the future of Draymond Green.
The Golden State Warriors could retool their roster in the offseason as they look to get back to championship form and maximize the final seasons of Steph Curry.
In the four years since winning the NBA Championship, the Warriors have lost in the second round twice and missed the playoffs twice.
Curry is still playing at a high level, and the Warriors have tried to reshape the roster to remain competitive, but deals not coming to fruition, or injuries, have lowered their ceiling.
Though the Warriors lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks two years ago, they have kept Draymond Green next to Curry, giving him a familiar face and long-established chemistry.
The Future of Draymond Green
Though Green remains on the team, his name has come up in trade rumors, notably attached to Giannis Antetokounmpo talks last season.
According to Anthony Slater of ESPN, the Warriors are expected to keep Green through this offseason.
“Team sources have indicated that they have no intention to shop Green or push him out.
"The two sides will assuredly discuss the pros and cons of an opt-in or an opt-out and extend at a lower number. Team sources indicate that the long-term extension route would only make sense on the organization side if it generates the type of immediate cap room that helps them add a usable piece."
The article notes that the Warriors still view Draymond as a positive piece on the court, noting his defensive skills, ability to make winning plays, and seeing his game rise in the playoffs. It's also said that he is a positive as a leader and viewed as another coaching voice.
Flexibility with Draymond Green
Green has a player option worth $27 million that he must make a decision on this offseason.
He has expressed a desire to opt out and work on a long-term extension with the team, potentially taking less money for a longer deal.
The Warriors could use the extra flexibility as they will be paying Jimmy Butler $56 million to rehab after he suffered an ACL tear in January. It is unknown if Butler will return this upcoming season, but if he doesn't, and the Warriors don't make any other significant offseason moves, the path for them to contend looks difficult.
Golden State has been active in trade talks in recent seasons, looking to acquire Paul George, Kevin Durant, and Giannis, though nothing came to fruition. They've also been linked to Kawhi Leonard over the past year.
