Could Klay Thompson return to the Warriors?
The Golden State Warriors haven't done much to change their roster this offseason, bringing back veterans and key pieces who were part of a tenth seed that missed the playoffs last season.
The Warriors took big swings at players like LeBron James and Jaylen Brown after the season ended, but ultimately struck out as both of those players ended up in Philadelphia.
In the end, the Warriors ended up re-signing Draymond Green , Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, DeAnthony Melton, and Gary Payton II, hoping that continuity, chemistry, and health would lead to a more successful season with head coach Steve Kerr also returning after concerns that he might walk away.
A Klay Thompson Reunion?
Klay Thompson has been mentioned as a buyout candidate by the Dallas Mavericks as the team continues to move in a new direction following the trade of Luka Doncic and the drafting of Cooper Flagg.
According to Brett Siegel of Clutch Points, if Thompson were to end up on the open market after a buyout, he would be welcome back to the Warriors, but his return is "highly unlikely" for this upcoming season.
As of now, Thompson remains on the Mavericks and is set to make $17.4 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
Thompson has seen his role reduced in Dallas, and he joined a completely different team than the one he signed up for, as he initially signed to play alongside Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Doncic was traded during Thompson's first season, and Irving was hurt shortly after, missing all of last season.
What Does Klay Have Left?
With the Mavericks last year, Klay averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists on 39% shooting from the field and 38% from three. His three-point shooting was the second- lowest of his career, only above the 2021-22 season, which was his first season after missing back-to-back years with knee and Achilles injuries.
His three-point attempts per game also dipped below eight attempts for the first time since he played alongside Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. The fewer attempts can be partially chalked up to not having teammates like Curry and Draymond Green or being part of a system like Golden State, but part of it is his reduced movement with age and injuries.
His overall defense isn't what it used to be for those same reasons.
On a team more equipped to utilize his spacing capabilities and give him a lesser role on defense, Klay can still be a valuable role player. The Warriors know him better than any team, and a reunion, even if it's not this season, could benefit both sides.
